Nick Johnson has decided to retire.  Please, resist the urge to post this picture:

Don't do it.

I always like that guy, though.  Thought he was going to be great here.  Never quite materialized.

He was great, or at least really good, when he could stay healthy.  Just never could stay on the field.  Too bad.

Ruben Amaro's free agent acquisitions as GM:

2009: Raul Ibanez, Jamie Moyer, Chan Ho Park
2010: Danys Baez, Juan Castro, Jose Contreras, Russ Gload, Placido Polanco, Brian Schneider
2011: Jose Contreras, Cliff Lee, JC Romero
2012: Laynce Nix, Jonathan Papelbon, Chad Qualls, Brian Schneider, Jim Thome, Dontrelle Willis
2013: Mike Adams, John Lannan, Demon Young, Yuniesky Betancourt

That is one woeful record. He's taken Pat Gillick's incredible organization and run it into the ground. The players he extended were Gillick's, he used Gillick's farm system to trade for other players. It's an old, expensive, worsening team with a terrible farm system.

He's awful.

Yeah, that's not a good track record.  After getting Yuni and Michael Young, trading for Francoeur might make heads explode at fangraphs.

That list doesn't include what might be his worst move - re-signing Howard when he didn't need to for $25 mil/yr for several years.

That's Austin Kearns with his head down, so two careers.

Carp was a wonder of modern medicine and good coaching.  There was a time  he would have been just another highly touted and drafted pitcher in the Toronto organization who never got a shot but for medicine, training, etc... that kept his arm going long enough to pick up awards and a world series or two.

King Felix gets seven years, $175 million. That's a massive precedent set for guys like Kershaw and Strasburg.
