It looked like Perez was going to help the Nationals get out of their funk
last week against the Marlins. Perez was staked to a 1-0 lead and cruising
during the first five innings, allowing just two hits. But the Marlins started
to get to him in the sixth. With one out, Hanley Ramirez scored the tying
run on single by Jeremy Hermida. Two batters later, Mike Jacobs singled
to put runners on first and second. Manny Acta took Perez out of the
game, and it was time for the bullpen to work its magic. On this day, the
relievers didn't get the job done and handed Perez the loss.

Pelfrey wasn't efficient, needing 100 pitches to complete five innings during
his season opener last Wednesday against the Phillies. But it was enough
for a victory, and enough, he said, to help him with a certain confidence
that he lacked last year. Pelfrey has faced the Nationals more than any
other team, posting a 1-1 record and 5.64 ERA in four career starts.
