Crawford was talked up as a building block by Ernie and Ted. Now he's traded for nothing. It's not cap space since they will have no cap space, anyway. It's nothing.
It's more room away from the luxury tax threshold next year, and an extra 3.2 million (Crawford's qualifying offer) the following season when they'll likely be around 18 million under the cap. That, and getting rid of Crawford, are good moves.
