Heyman sez Dodgers closing in on Greinke. Texas out.

Dodgers Close To Signing Zack Greinke

By Mike Axisa [December 8 at 7:25pm CST]

7:25pm: The Rangers have been told that Greinke is not signing with them, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.

6:59pm: It's a six-year contract worth $145MM, reports Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times (Twitter links). That would be the largest contract ever given to right-handed pitcher, surpassing Matt Cain's five-year, $112.5MM deal. Hernandez emphasizes that the deal is not done yet.

6:45pm: The Dodgers appear to be close to signing Zack Greinke, reports Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports (on Twitter). There is still ground to be covered, but Los Angeles is out in front for the right-hander's services at the moment.

Greinke, 29, is the free agent market's top pitcher and top overall player according to MLBTR's Tim Dierkes. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner pitched to a 3.48 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 212 1/3 innings split between the Brewers and Angels last season. It was his fourth 200+ inning season in the last five years.

The Dodgers, Angels, and Rangers have been the righty's three primary suitors this offseason. Yesterday we learned that the Halos are "very unlikely" to re-sign Greinke, who was "blown away" by his visit to Texas. The Dodgers were also said to be pessimistic about their chances to land him, so these things can change in a hurry.

$25 mil a year for Greinke.  Crazy.

I'd still take the Nats rotation over the Dodgers though.

Strasburg........Kershaw
Gonzalez.........Greinke
Zimmermann...Billingsley
Detwiler..........Beckett
Haren.............Capuano, Harang, Lilly

Two great aces, two great #2s, but our depth is a lot more upside-y and a lot less bounceback-y, even with Haren.

Billingsley was horrible last year, but the Dodgers do have a friendlier park for pitchers.  It's a coin toss as to who has the better staff.

How's their bullpen looking?

$29 million in the first year (signing bonus of $12 million, salary of $17 million).

Dodgers now set to pay around $235 million in payroll and luxury tax in 2013. But local TV deal nets 'em $250 million per year. Comfy math.

Nice for baseball to have owners that want to win and are comfortable with a bottom line that is solid... but not out of this world.

Don't they have arbitration eligibiles though? What about when their players start to age out? I bet they take some heavy losses at some point. PS There are other operating costs besides payroll and other sources of income besides tv. Twitter is bullcrap because it makes people forget about details.

And you're forgetting the income from tickets and merchandising. They'll make money... they just won't be sure to rake in the profits like some owner do. They'll just be comfortable with a solid margin.

I hope the Dodgers sign Kyle Lohse too.  Or may Anibal Sanchez for $100 mil.  Maybe both.  If they are never going to run out of money, they will run out of roster spots eventually.

Assuming the wiki is right, the luxury tax threshold is $178 MM for 2013, and a first time exceedance is taxed at 22.5%.  The Dodgers are at $235MM.  We'll assume that is the right rough number - B-R had them at $195MM before Greinke, but there are additional costs beyond payroll in the tax calculation.  The tax is a bit less than $13MM, effectively bringing their contract costs up to ~$248MM.

In other words, the Dodgers use all of their local TV revenue to cover payroll.  If the Nats did that, they would have a <$30MM payroll.  :?

Blue has pointed out that there are other penalties for having such a high payroll, including losing some general revenues of MLB and having to subsidize Loria et al.   The Dodger should draw 3 million fans again, so maybe they can make money, but I think their payroll is unsustainable, especially when the luxury tax starts to escalate for repeat offenders.  I'm expecting them to start dumping players like Ethier, and maybe look for a taker on Beckett and others if they somehow are not contending.

Why?

Edit: Royals will probably not resign Shields, but I guess they're getting a decent return. Still, 2 years vs. 6+ of Myers.
