Washington sends John Patterson (0-2, 9.35 ERA) to the mound. He gave up three runs - all in a 31-pitch first inning - of Saturday's 7-1 loss to Arizona. Patterson, the Nationals' opening-day starter, did not pitch after July 9 last season because of a forearm injury and pitching coach Randy St. Claire has said it will take time for him to regain his arm strength.

Patterson said he was bothered by the cold in his last outing, and Friday's weather forecast is expected to be cold and windy.

Mike Pelfrey will make his season debut for the Mets. The right-hander, a first-round draft pick in 2005, was 2-1 with a 5.48 ERA, but did not face the Nationals.

I predicted a win for last night's game and I will do the same again.  If JP gives up 3 runs or less in 6 innings then we will find a way to win it.

Our 1-2-3 are always so easy to get out in the first inning.

And the Mets' first hitter, Reyes, gets a lead-off single..

Edit: SOB, JP throws a wild pitch which leads to a Met run.. JP just does not look the same out there.  1-0 NY

Not too much damage done.  But this isn't the same Patterson of yesteryear.  Something is really wrong here.

What you think is his problem? Is it somethin wrong with his mechanics? Is it somethin mentally? COuld it be the eighties look? I had high expectations for him. He can still meet him tho.

I personally think it is mental.  We've seen this guy pitch some great games and they are in him but something is screwing him mentally.  He just isn't as aggressive as he was last year and the year before when healthy.

I don't know why people insist that they see anything good about Schneider's bat.

Was Patterson our ace lsat year too before he got injured(i mean, was he the opening day or number 1 pitcher). Maybe the high expectations of being "the guy" on our staff is too much pressure for him.

Maybe that injury and Frank's impatience did permanent damage?

It doesn't seem that JP has anything on his fastball.  If MASN's radar gun is right then he is topping in the mid to upper 80s.  Ugh, hanging curve ball..

It's not fair to place any part of the blame on Frank Robinson. His name shouldn't even come up in the discussion.
