http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2010/03/ie8-safari4-firefox3-iphone-fall-on-day-1-of-pwn2own.ars

Quote
The first day of the annual Pwn2Own  contest in which security researchers can win cash and hardware if they successfully compromise machines using zero-day exploits is finished. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7, Firefox 3 on Windows 7, Safari 4 on Mac OS X 10.6, and iPhone OS 3 were all compromised during the competition. Google's Chrome was the only browser left standing—and in fact, was completely untested. None of the researchers at the competition even tried to attack Chrome.

Quote
It is certainly not the case that Chrome has no security flaws—a couple of days before the Pwn2Own draw was made to decide who got to attack which machine and in what order, Google published an update to Chrome that fixed a range of security flaws, some of which were deemed to be high-risk.

Quote
Neither the iPhone exploit nor the IE8 exploit managed to escape the OS-supplied sandboxes that protect these platforms. Without escaping the sandboxes, the impact that flaws can have is reduced, preventing, for example, writing to hard disk (and hence, preventing installation of malware). Nonetheless, read-only access is still valuable for data theft.

And just a little reminder from last year's contest

Quote
Miller repeated his claim that Mac OS X is easy to exploit. He makes a clear distinction between the browser and the underlying operating system, stating that for example while Firefox on Windows is very hard to crack, Firefox on Mac OS X is easy, because Mac OS X lacks all the anti-exploit features Windows has built-in. "The things that Windows do to make it harder [for an exploit to work], Macs don't do," Miller says, "Hacking into Macs is so much easier. You don't have to jump through hoops and deal with all the anti-exploit mitigations you'd find in Windows."

Cue JMad to come in and say that Chrome on Linux is the best thing since Jesus made everyone fish sandwiches

Whatever about no Mac viruses. Linux rootkits have been around for a long time, and they are evil.

I think the real message is if you want to be "safe" use Opera

Quote
"The problem Microsoft has is they have a big market share, said Vreugdenhil, the hacker who attacked IE. "I use Opera, but that's basically because it has a tiny market share and as far as I know, nobody is really interested in creating a drive-by download for opera. The web at the moment is pretty scary, actually."

Speaking of that, I hope that Apple approves Opera Mini in the iPhone App store.

Do you think they will?  All the tech outlets picking up the story seem to think it's going to be rejected, but I wouldn't put it past Apple to approve it just to show them up.

They will probably reject it.  And it's bullcrap.  I hate the closed nature of the iPhone.  Especially since that closed nature is supposed to help with security.  Which it obviously doesn't ;)

Apple can kiss my ass if they approve Opera Mini, but continue to reject Google Voice.

I thought they already approved Google Voice?  I mean I know they rejected it at first, but I thought it got submitted again and accepted after the whole flap over that.

Is it just me or does gmail seem a little faster today?  Looks like they tweaked a few of the buttons and other graphical doo-dads too.

Truth be told, I never actually use it, but there's a launcher that goes with a pared down version that's portable.  Works with any valid key.  The only drawback is that it prompts you to accept the license agreement on every launch.  Not a bad tradeoff though, if you ask me.  If you're really interested I'll ask my friend about it when he gets back online.

Are there any stand alone Java compilers out there?  I just made a change to a school assignment, and I don't have my computer by my side.  I need to test compile it to see if it runs, but I can't install the Sun compiler since I don't have admin rights on this computer.

Ssh to a machine that has reasonable access to compilers built in.

Yeah, I don't have anything like that.  (Actually I'm at work and tried to get some changes done on lunch break, but I would like to test them).

It's just a stupid calculator program, should be no problem, but I had planned on going out tonight

First order I placed, the guy never bothered to fulfill it. To Glyde's credit, the seller doesn't get paid till USPS confirms delivery and the buyer is satisfied that the disc plays.

Surprise! A Government Accountability Office review of piracy studies finds that they are largely guesses, based on untested assumptions. Is this what content owners thought they were getting when they pushed the PRO-IP Act through Congress?
