Make fun of New Jersey if you want, but it (South Jersey) has the best birding within 300 miles of here.  Cape May is  a birder's dream.   (By the way, it's the Goldfinch.)

Cape May isn't in New Jersey. (Okay, I know it is, we spend a week there every Summer. They even have their own warbler. It's a fantastic place.)

So this person on the Facebook MD Birding group has been stopping at the Joppatowne Park and Ride every day because a group of assorted warblers has been setting up camp there....

The Nikon Monarch is a *huge* step up from the Alpens

I know.  I went on a guided walk in Cape May in August, where they were advertising various binoculars so they lent them out for the walk and I used those.  The difference was dramatic.  I might end up settling for them.  I have a trip to Costa Rica coming up, so I need to choose something soon.

Blackwater's known for fall raptor migration (right?), which I've never cared that much about.

And swamp critters. I really like Blackwater but I have a thing for wetlands.

Actually I love wetlands. But whenever I've been to Blackwater I've gotten eaten alive by mosquitoes and biting flies, so I've stopped going there.  Most other places I can control it with spray but for some reason not there.

Don't go dawn or dusk or you'll never make it out alive. Long sleeves and a net hat work best.

Sweet. We stay on Sunset, right across from Lighhouse Ave. Love it there.

We've stayed a week there every summer since 1995.  May Caper, 815 Beach Ave.

For those considering the trip to spring training this year, I just got a promotional e-mail about sale fares on the Auto Train (and other routes). Information linked below. Note the fare quoted is for coach class with no upgrade permitted and you still have to pay the additional fee for the car (a vehicle ticket is required to ride the Auto Train). Still, $85 is a very good price.

Jersey is great, when we went up for christmas, we took the Parkway all the way up and looped back down to the in laws instead of our normal route going to the  turnpike- my daughters were utterly fascinated by the industrial wasteland that is the Parkway between Newark Airport and the Meadowlands

I thought that was the NJTP with the refineries, rail lines, ports, and power plants.

I live in a much nicer portion of New Jersey, far away from chemical plants and landfills.

If it covers Newark Airport and the Meadowlands it's the turnpike.  Garden State won't get you to those.

Afraid that doesn't narrow it down.

I worked there for about a year.  It's pretty awful.  Like Cleveland awful, but worse.

55 more days until we leave for our trip.  This year we are going to see a game at Disney, one in Lakeland, then to Viera and then down to Pt. St. Lucie.

We got pretty good airfare to Orlando back in the beginning of December.  $202 RT.  I see the prices have gone back up again.

I have always stayed in Cocoa Beach. You get the benefits of a beach vacation and baseball. Cocoa village is in between the beach and the ballpark. And staying at the beach is good for non game days.
