I wouldn't even be worried about velocity right now necessarily. Health is all that matters. Once he gets comfortable and confident, then Id expect a spike in velo. Plus, hes a lefty that if he retains his other pitches, could still get guys out at 90-91. 95 isn't necessary, though itd be great if he could. It would be nice to know what he was throwing though, for comparison sake in a few weeks.

velocity and command are decent indicators of health, so high k, low bb outings bode well

While I agree, I'm just saying I wouldn't worry what he's hitting his first game or two back. There is a certain level of cconfidence that comes back once you've getting people out and are pain free. I never came back completely after labrum surgery but when I first came hack, my velo wasn't significantly better than it was pre surgery. A month later with confidence and continued strength bulding, I was up another 5mph. I'm just saying I think hell be throwing a little harder in a few weeks and that if he was o ly sitting at 88, I wouldn't be discouraged.

Took the loss today. Roughed up a bit: 4.2ip, 6h, 5r(4er), 2bb, 8k, 2hr.

The 8 k's in 4.2 innings is nice. So is a 4/1 k/bb ratio but that's the end of the positives.

Call him up. We can pitch Dan Haren 3 inning and Matt Purke 3 innings every start.

Matt Purke so far at Hagerstown, unless I miscounted:

5 starts, 23 innings, 24 hits, 7 walks, 33 strikeouts

12.9 K/9
4.7 K/BB
1.35 WHIP
3.13 ERA

There are 6 pitchers on roster older than him, and a guy born the same week as him. Dixon Anderson's older.

Purke! I'm getting excited just thinking about a potential rotation with Purke, Giolito, and Cole (and Jordan?).

This is getting strange. I've searched twitter, I can't find a single velo mention. All jokes aside, that's the biggest indicator of health with shoulders. Anyone know what he's sitting?

Where at?

With Strasburg, Gio, and JZimm, there are only two spots for the foreseeable future.

I don't see them sending Purke to AFL. He's an injury risk and they'll play conservative with him. They don't NEED him right now, and, to be honestly, even with the AFL, he won't be ready for at least two seasons. Let's play it safe with the one made of glass.
