I guess anything that facilitates better circulation and flushing of muscle fibres is a good thing.
Thai ninja massage is another option.
Rolling your thigh/calf over a "roller", using your body weight (usually) to apply pressure to soft tissue. There are some videos in that link.
It can be very effective when fascia tissue is hanging up causing pain. Plantar fascitis, ITBS, etc. Or maybe it's just a placebo affect, but it seemed to help me a lot.
