Ben Goessling of the Washington Times confirms what I had heard rumored, Kennesaw State RHP Chad Jenkins and Stanford RHP Drew Storen were at Nationals Park for a workout today. Jenkins and Storen are names we had heard over the last couple of weeks.Jenkins is described as a big-bodied right-hander. PGCC has this scouting report “he throws in the low-90s … with two-seam tailing action on his fastball. His other pitches-an 82-83 mph slider, an 85-mph cutter and an effectively-fading high-70s change-were all solid big-league average. He displayed unusually good control, but his lack of command may get him in trouble in pro ball as he leaves too many balls over the plate”Storen’s scouting report from MiLB.com … “has the stuff to be a starter and it’s not unheard of for a team to take a college closer and let him start as a pro. That being said, there’s a reason Stanford has him in the bullpen … his command hasn’t always been sharp. Even as a short reliever, though, his fastball-curve mix is more than enough to get hitters out, especially from the right side. Good college closers usually get drafted well and Storen should be no exception.”[/uote]
Let's hear it. Go on record, who do you want the Nats to take with the 10th overall pick?I'm all about Mike Leake.
I'm down for Leake as well.
idk, he sounds like a guy who should go in the late teens or 20s.
have you seen his numbers? 124.2 IP 71 H 19 R 17 ER 20 BB 143 K 2 HR (15-1, 1.23 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, .169 BA Against, 10.32 K/9)That's going against Pac-10 Competition too.
I was reading some scouting reports on him, and he seems to max out as a good #2 or #3 for you.
what is it with this franchise and pitchers with command issues? sounds like we are going signability at 10, not best available.
Nothing wrong with that. This guy can pitch.
If Zimmermann, Strasburg, and Detwiler become what they're supposed to be, then Mike Leake would be tremendously valuable if he were merely a good #2/3.
79/211 (.374 BA/.435/.569), 19 Doubles, 5 Triples, 4 HRs, 32 RBIs, 20 BB, 38 Ks.18 Errors in the field.
True. But our system has much better pitching than hitting... I don't know. It really sucks that there isn't a lot of hitting talent in this draft.
That's what trades are for. Look at the Rays this offseason. They were stacked with pitching, so they traded Edwin Jackson for Matt Joyce.
Is that a good thing? Edwin Jackson is owning in Detroit.
Notre Dame outfielder A.J. Pollock was at Nats Park this afternoon for a pre-draft workout. Pollock took BP at about 3 p.m. today, as just about everybody in the Nats scouting/player development department watched from behind the cages or along the first base line. Even Mark Lerner emerged. (First time all homestand I've seen him.) Who else was watching? Acting GM Mike Rizzo; scouting director Dana Brown; crosscheckers Marteese Robinson, Jimmy Gonzalez and Kris Kline; Florida-based scout Paul Tinnel; assistant GM Bob Boone; assistant director of player development Mark Scialabba; and director of baseball operations Brian Parker. Rick Eckstein and Manny Acta were also out on the field. As Pollock hit, a few current Nats -- Willingham, Willie Harris, Josh Bard and Elijah Dukes -- took early BP. At one point, Eckstein and Boone pulled Pollock aside and offered some pointers. Pollock, rated by Baseball America as the 23rd-ranked overall prospect, is described as "one of the safer bats due to steady, consistent swing and pro approach."
Leake finished strong and picked up the win to improve to 16-1 on the season. You can't really argue with the results he has put up this year. 8 IP 8 H 4 R 3 ER 1 BB 7 K.We could do much worse than select Leake with the 10th pick. I heard Kyle Gibson was diagnosed with an injury and he will plummet in the draft.
