here's a pretty detailed breakdown of the testing process, by SI's Will Carroll (who wrote "The Juice").  He says to withhold judgement on Braun until we know more details about the testing process.

For what its worth, Braun pissed clean a week or two later when they tested him again to see if the first results were a mistake.

Of course, if someone is cycling on/off, they'll likely pee clean in a second test as they'd likely have cycled off by then.

Caroll says it takes about 2-4 weeks to clean up.

That assumes his first positive wasn't when he had already cycled off and was caught with what's left in his bloodstream.

Who's also probably a juicer.

Then he's wasting his money.

Ken Rosenthal reporting it was a "prohibited substance" and NOT a performance-enhancer. So... weed?

Does weed raise your testosterone level?

I'm totally lost on this one.

As far as I know, weed isn't on the banned drugs list. If it was, Lincecum would have been banned a long time ago.

So it'd have to be something like coke or speed.

What non-PED prohibited substances raise your testosterone level? I was just making it up about weed.

MLBTR:

Quote
SUNDAY, 11:50am: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears from a source that Braun tested positive for a prohibited substance, not a performance-enhancing drug (Twitter link). Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was told the same thing, with his source saying there's "never" been a result like this since MLB's drug testing program began.

What the hell does that mean?

Quote from: Jeff Passan
The only banned substances MLB doesn't consider PEDs are drugs of abuse. Stimulants in own category. Everything else falls under PED domain.

This is the typical cycle. Athlete tests positive. Proclaims innocence. Tries to spin. And not once has a baseball player been exonerated.

Perhaps he's pulling a Jason Kendall and abusing Adderall/Concerta/ADD medication.

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/12/11/ryan-brauns-testosterone-levels-were-insanely-high-says-source-familiar-with-the-case/

"Insanely high" levels of testosterone.  Twice the next highest ever recorded.

From that article:
----------
Ryan Braun’s original test for performance-enhancing drugs as the playoffs were winding down in October was “insanely high, the highest ever for anyone who has ever taken a test, twice the level of the highest test ever taken,” said a source familiar with the developing case in which Ryan was reported to have tested positive for an elevated level of testosterone caused by a synthetic substance, triggering a possible 50-game suspension.

The never-before-seen ratio, according to the source, is one of several “highly unusual circumstances.”

I asked my mom, because she's a medical translator. She thought for a while about what non-PEDs you could ingest that would up your testosterone, and finally suggested that there are topical creams, skin creams, that get absorbed into your system. Some of them have hormones - she made up the example of a hair-loss prevention cream (which I suspect Braun doesn't need) which might bring hormones into the system.

Braun's camp is now oddly saying that the ingestion was something that he could not have known about, which is weird, like someone was spiking his Gatorade.

The dreaded "I could have taken something and not known what it was" excuse.  Enjoy your suspension if that's the best explanation you can muster.

I wonder how high the bar is to show that? If the ban is up held and he goes after the tester, I wonder if they are insured enough to cover 50 games of his salary + lost endorsements
