Oil Can Boyd
« Topic Start: February 15, 2009, 03:14:34 PM »
MLBTR:

Quote
Here's something I can't believe I'm typing... can Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd make a Major League comeback at age 49? Oil Can hasn't pitched since 1991, but claims his velocity is back up in the low 90s, and his curveball is back to form. He's always dreamt of carrying on Satchel Paige's legend and pitching into his 60s. Boyd's quote:

"I have nothing to lose, and all a major league team has to lose is 15 minutes," said Boyd. "Give me 15 minutes and I'll show I can still pitch. That's all I want."

Boyd threw at the Red Sox fantasy camp, and former catcher Mike Stanley said that Oil Can's stuff is the same as it was 18 years ago, and his passion hasn't died down one bit.

That's pretty impressive that he can still throw in the low 90s.

Well, as long as you change your oil every 3000 miles, you should be okay...

The Pirates will spend fifteen minutes evaluating him.

If he showed well in his 15 minute tryout, it would be fun to sign him to a minor league deal, and see if he could actually pitch.  For one thing, he'd spark a lot of interest and sell a few tickets on behalf of your minor league franchises, something that is helpful in solidifying those relationships.

It's not like pitchers in the 50's or 60's will ruin our reputation for competitiveness and attracting top notch talent.

True enough Chief but Oil Can counts as at least two for our veteran presence quota.

Lighten up Tom and enjoy the snarky* sense of humor. Not everyone around here is a drama queen despite what our current crop of outfielders may lead you to believe. ;)

If Oil Can makes it back, I'm getting this baseball card. This team better win if I'm plunking down 15 cents of my hard earned money for this card.

Naw, I'm pretty excited about the coming season, actually.  It's just funny to run with the ESPN gag ;)

This guy is a riot and I say we give him a shot. I'd rather him than Cordero.

In 2005, Oil Can was featured in the Boston Globe; they reported that he was throwing 85-88 for the independent leagues. But his motivation back then was quite different:

Quote
Boyd is back on the mound because he still loves the game and thinks he still can pitch. He's playing because he wants to impress those who might someday promote "Oil Can Boyd's Traveling All-Stars." There is no such team at this time, but the Can envisions a day when his hardball troupe might tour the South, bringing joy to little towns where baseball always has been king.

"I want to find me 18 ex-major leaguers that want to go with me and play some baseball," he said.

Oil Can Boyd was the centerpiece of the White Sox replacement player roster during the 1994 strike.  As such, isn't he barred from membership in the player's union?

Does a player have to be a union member to play?  It seems preposterous that a union can blackball a player from pursuing his chosen profession.

Kevin Millar was a replacement player.
