What about the organizations obligations to the players? Strasburg is only 23 years old, he has his entire career in front of him. Isn't it impossibly irresponsible for an organization to knowingly put a player's career at risk, regardless of the circumstances?

Organizations like that NEVER succeed ultimately.

The Nats will do what's best for Strasburg, which ultimately is what's best for the organization.

One REAL WS ring > 5 mythical WS rings

One MYTHICAL WS ring this year < 5 mythical WS rings

Point is that nothing is guaranteed this year or next. You just make the decision that gives you the best chance to win a WS ring at some point during your window.

This. And as Bos said, what pitcher or player would want to play for an organization that puts their needs ahead of the player's health and career?

you mean like the millions it will cost Clippard if he moves back into the setup role?

or the chance to start next year on another team's major league roster getting demoted cost Lannan?

or the money and service that either Solano will loose by having to go down to the minors when Ramos returns even though he's mlb ready?

every decision helps some players and costs others, you can't manage a team thinking about every player's career

The situation with Strasburg is completely different. We're talking about a player's health and well being, not his wallet.

wouldn't that be this year? Assuming things continue as they are, we'll be entering the playoffs with a historically good rotation playing the first series against a team that has had to burn their ace in a play in game- I like those odds better than hoping everything comes together again in the future

As crazy as it seems, this could be Nats' best chance to win it all. Really. There's no predicting the future. I keep coming back to Caps.

When the Caps lost to Pittsburgh in seven games in '09, pain was quelled because the "window" would be open for so long. Stras could be Ovi.

While I don't disagree, there's a difference between risking someones health and in turn their career vs where they pitch in the rotation or whether or not they play at AAA next year. Hell, where was Ramos before he got traded to us? What was Clippard doing with the Yanks?

None of those impact a player's health or ability to play at all. Apples and oranges.

Of course I said career. Pitching Strasburg all the way through October (or whenever) could severely jeopardize his long term career as a major league baseball player.

like I said, every decision helps some hurts others, you only have 25 players in the majors, 8 starters in the field, 5 in the rotation and 1 closer, not being one of those players hurts a guy's career, it's not that the team is being 'bad' it's just how baseball is

Perfect quotes.  Also remember that the Wizards had the best record in the Conference when Arenas, Butler, and Jameson were going strong, then Arenas hurt his knee and was never the same, for that brief moment we had the best team and a shot at a championship and it blew up.  Win now.

Ramos was a Top 50 prospect... but point taken.

These situations could not be more different. Lannan is PHYSICALLY able to pitch, he is still pitching now.  Strasburg gets injured (God forbid) and can no longer pitch his career is OVER.

What business decisions baseball teams make based on a players ability and situation is completely different than knowingly putting them at physical risk.

I understand what you're trying to say, but honestly this is a nonsensical comparison.

Letting a pitcher take the mound, period, is putting him at physical risk.

I thought it was just me but the comparison makes no sense at all.

Yep, it scares me. We have to go for it, now, this season. Doesn't mean we mortgage the future for this season but you have to strike why the iron is hot. This is what the Caps have failed to do over and over. They kept getting bounced from the playoffs and just saying "ah, we will get them next year or the year after"

Yeah, pretty sure inning 220 would be significantly more risky than inning 120.

Come on this is ridiculous. We're talking about one of the best young pitchers in baseball coming off of Tommy John Surgery. They are going to limit his innings this year because it's the responsible thing to do.

Where are you getting 220 innings from?

You could easily get him through the playoffs under 200 if you start to manage his starts to about 4 innings for the next couple of weeks.

This is certainly a risk

Ask Dan Marino if he thought more Super Bowls were a foregone conclusion.

It doesn't matter, they're just not going to risk Strasburg's career at a shot at a title this year. They're just not.
