The kid just finished his age 19 season.  A reasonable jump from the 98 innings he pitched this year would be maybe 120 to130 innings (I'll defer to one of the minor league gurus like RD on this).  Maybe an extended spring then pitch May - August and get him up to 25 starts?

by the way, he went 98 innings, 10-2, 2.20 ERA, 110 Ks, 28 BB, WHIP 1.00, 7 HR allowed.

I agree. We'll say 130 innings of Single A and Double A in 2015.

That means a reasonable jump in 2016 will be 165-175 innings. The last thing you want is to call him up at the end of that, when he is at his most tired, and expect him to go max effort in the majors.

Let him throw a little in Double A or Triple A in 2016, and the first opportunity available, call him up the big league squad. Let him get a couple starts and see where he stands against big leaguers. Then he knows what to work on when he goes back down.

Yep, no reason to rush him.

Made Keith Law's list of prospects of the year:

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/post/_/id/2820/2014-prospects-of-the-year

Quote
While the Nats shut down Giolito after just 98 innings, he still managed to finish 11th in the Sally League in strikeouts and was fourth among starters there in ERA thanks to a low walk rate. Giolito, the Nats' first pick in 2012, managed all of this in his first full year back from Tommy John surgery despite an edict from the team to throw only his four-seamer, not his two-seamer, ostensibly so he could work on fastball command. Back in April, I was lucky enough to catch Giolito against Baltimore's 2013 first-rounder, Hunter Harvey, who also had an incredible year in 2014, and I don't think there was a better pitching matchup in all of the minors this season.

So he's pretty much the best pitching prospect in baseball, yes?

Stop this!! Ever time I see a new post about Little Gio, I expect to read that he has just ripped his arm apart or suffered some other catastrophic injury!

You should be used to TJ survivors, welch. We have two in the rotation already.

But Giolito has already had TJ. It's the second TJ that seems to say "done".

When he gets here, I think the "Little" designator might go to Gonzalez.

I dunno, I think Gio Gonzalez might be a fat body if he can't get his supplements.

Religious history major.  I meant the fellows that the beers were named after.

Pliny the Younger wrote the oldest correspondence by a non-Christian identify the religion's adherents as "Christians."  he was governor of the area that is now Turkey. The policy he and the Emperor settled on was something like don't seek them out to persecute them but if it comes up, yes it is a crime to be a Christian and you can punish them.

I was just making a bad joke, I knew you meant the actual fellows.  But cool stuff that you were a religious history major, I just try not to fry people's skin off with RF....
