Theater Thread
« Topic Start: March 14, 2011, 11:36:55 PM »
Just finished watching it on PBS from this past weekend.  Breathtaking.  It never gets old.

Will you join in our crusade? Will you be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade, is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing? Say do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes.

I wish there were more recorded performances, or at least more available on netflix to watch instantly.  Two of my favorite actors are Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Derek Jacobi, and I'd love to be able to watch some of their stage performances.

Given how the economy had cracked when I was in Ireland a few months ago, they must be giving away tickets. Or maybe all those IMF wallahs administering the Dublin slave markets these days are buying up the $$$ ALW musicals.

When Sept 11 happened,  I couldn't get the first phrase of that song:

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men.
It is the song of the people
Who will not be slaves again.....

May not be the exact words but close.

My Mom grew up in NY.  She saw all the greats on Broadway.   LES MIS is one of the few musicals that came after that era that she enjoyed.   I love it too.  Saw it at the Kennedy Center years ago.  No it never gets old.

I saw it in London back in 2004 at the Queen's Theatre (it's still playing there)...first-rate.

Took mom to see Wicked for her birthday this afternoon.  Wow is all I can say.  It was just as good the second time as it was the first.

After 9-11 I had the lyrics to that part of the finale stuck in my head:

Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
Who are climbing to the light.

For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.

They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord.
They will walk behind the plough-share,
They will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward.

LES MIS is the best musical in the last 40-45 years, hands down.

I saw the PBS special too.  It was, indeed, breathtaking.

I despise the genre - which is odd since I'm "starring" in one that opens Friday.

Sorry, to bring this out of moth balls, but I just bought tickets to see Fiddler on the Roof in April.  Gonna be sweet.  Wanted to see this one for a long time.

I was just about to post this when I saw I already had

In that vein, anyone know of any good stuff that is on Netflix or Amazon Prime streaming?

We have auditions in two weeks for The Man Who Came to Dinner.  Assistant Directing again this time so hopefully I stay that way instead of having to fill a role halfway through the rehearsal process...   :?

I also applied to be a director in next year's season.  I had to submit three plays so I chose:  MacBeth, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Fortinbras - with an extra throw in of The Complete Word of God.  Deadline to submit is March 1 so I probably won't hear until after then.

I auditioned for our school musical (Hairspray) even though I've never done anything of the sort... it went okay, we'll see if I made it.

Orpheum Theatre in Omaha.

This is about 2 rows in front of where our seats will be.

We held our auditions for The Man Who Came to Dinner last night and had a great turnout of 21 people.  We have another round tonight and are expecting another 20+.

Fiddler is great, and I loved watching recently on PBS The Phantom of The Opera. But I agree that Les Mis is one of the best ever. I'm really looking forward to the new Les Mis musical movie they are doing, with some of the same folks.
