hrm. my sound has totally crapped out in Xubuntu. no sound at all for anything.

I loaded my Puppy CD and have gotten it to the point where it is barely audible with headphones(it sounds like it is very far away, even when volume is maxed out)., but i don't even get that with Xubuntu.

wondering if a fresh install might fix this. because otherwise i have absolutely no clue how to get my sound back. thinking maybe something in my xubuntu install is corrupted or something. i dunno.

very frustrating.

ok now barely audible in Xubuntu w/ headphones. I don't have any idea what the problem is or how to fix it.

I'd suggest going to ubuntuforums.org and asking.

You're probably looking at running alsamixer to check all the volume levels.  If that doesn't do it, you'll need to run lspci to get the details of the exact model for further troubleshooting.

so apparently there is a new Official Derivative of Ubuntu debuting with Lucid Lynx in April.

Lubuntu. as it sounds, it is a LXDE version of Ubuntu.

from what I hear it is much lighter and faster than Xubuntu.

I got the latest Alpha Iso, I'll post impressions and screenshots.

also, synaptic, add/remove programs, and all those different ways to install programs seem to be going away in Lucid, in favor of this all-in-one Ubuntu Software Center.

and lastly, have any of you used Ubuntu One? apparently it is getting a Music Store in Lucid.

Hey Nathan, what's the terminal command to mount a CD/DVD drive?

the current Alpha of Lubuntu does not do this yet, and I need to install my wireless drivers from my CD.

Depends on what your cd drive is and where it is connected.

Probably hdb or hdc.  Here are some instructions:

Google seems to say that it's the system's MD5 checksum?  I've never heard of it.

so what i can tell you so far about Lubuntu, is that it looks pretty slick.

It comes with Chromium (the Open Source version, not the Google Version) as its default browser, MPlayer and Aqualung as its default media players. Sylpheed for Mail. Abiword/Gnumeric as its default Office Apps. Pidgin/XChat for IM and IRC, Transmission for Torrents.

It uses Openbox and LXPanel. at least I think it is LXpanel.  only one Panel, on the bottom, as opposed all the other 'Buntus that have 2 Panels.

the Iso is 380MB total.

its in Alpha 3 right now, so naturally some things don't work (like auto mounting) and  will change before April 29th when it will go live(some of the current packages will be replaced).

Lubuntu in specific, and Lucid Lynx in general are shaping up to be really nice from what I can tell.

I'm using Alpha 3 of the main line Ubuntu, and it's not really all that bad from a stability standpoint.  A big improvement over Alpha 2.  It's supposed to have an all new look and feel by the final release too.  No more orange and brown!!!

Nope, still there.  They aren't taking synaptic out of the main release until software center has matured a bit, 10.10 or maybe 11.04.

You can always install synaptic from software center as it looks like it will stay in the repos, just not in the default install of future versions.

I see. i had heard that the Software center was supposed to become default in 10.04.

the Software Center is ridiculously easy to use.

you know anything about Ubuntu One?

I borked my laptop again.

I keep trying crap, breaking my laptop, reinstalling, then breaking again.

and now both of my LiveCDs are whacked. they both crash in the middle of installing.

one of these days I am going to install  the OS and then just leave it the freak alone.

this time I was trying to replace the XFCE desktop with the Prototype Lubuntu 9.10 desktop.

it worked pretty well....until I rebooted the machine.  I made the mistake of deleting the whole Xubuntu desktop, and it froze whenever I tried to boot. bleh.

i'll be computerless for a day or two, until I can get to the library to make another LiveCD.

You aren't a Linux guy if you haven't broken your install a hundred times.

Finally *hopefully* gonna get my computer fixed up...again.

gonna do the main Ubuntu distro this time. I've been reading up on it, and supposedly my computer should be able to run it with no problems. the people on LinuxQuestions.org said that my computer is a little more powerful than I initially thought, and that Xubuntu was more for really, really old compuers like Pentium II and IIIs. and that the only real difference between Xubuntu and Ubuntu is GNOME vs XFCE, but underneath the desktop environment is pretty much identical.

gonna give mainline Ubuntu a shot, and if it runs sluggishly, then I'll just install XFCE.

Not right this second, I'm at work, but yes I do have it installed as my tertiary OS on my MacBook Pro at home.  It's pretty good.  Alpha 2 was unusable, but Alpha 3 has been pretty solid so far.  Granted I don't use it heavily anyway.

Beta 1 is scheduled to be released tomorrow according to the roadmap.
