In Baseball America's new midseason top 50 prospects, Peacock is listed at #42.

Yeah, someone mentioned this in the  Following the Minor Leagues thread, I think.  It is so amazing though for a 41st round pick that it's probably worth another post. ;)

Big that he finally got that promotion to AAA. Even if he doesn't get a September call up, it's enough starts at that level to get him ready to compete for a spot in the rotation next year.

Baseball Prospectus was not as excited by Brad Peacock as we were.

"Brad Peacock overpowered someone I’d never heard of (Alfredo Silverio) by throwing three fastballs—decent fastballs, by Future Game standards. Silverio struck himself out on a pitch about a foot above the zone. Chih-Hsien Chiang, another questionable prospect, swung at a first pitch from Peacock and also got himself out. Wilin Rosario, a legitimate prospect, was able to make Peacock work, forcing Peacock to his off-speed offerings—a curve and change."

Drew Pomeranz sure knows who Silverio is.

Reading the article, it's painfully obvious that he'd picked out who he liked and didn't before the game began and wasn't going to allow the results to change his mind.  Pomeranz gets praised endlessly.

I really have never been that high on Pomeranz ... and I know Sunday is just one outing, but damn he was bad.

I saw that Peacock has already pitched 140 or so innings in past years.  If he hits 160 this year, he can probably do 180+ next year.

Yeah, that's about as cynically as you can portray that young man's outing.

I wonder if all the people he's been mowing down in AA have been "getting themselves out" too?

It's also funny to read that perfectly placed 94 mph heaters are "decent fastballs" now.

What a dope.

You assume the writer has some sort of bias against Peacock. I assume that as we are fans, its the other way around.

That would be an unfounded assumption in this case considering that you have no idea what kind of objectivity I or many of the other posters on this site have. There's also long been a bias in baseball against unheralded, less projectable players in the scouting community, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Peacock's draft positioning and less than ideal physical tools influenced that analysis.

Keith Law piles on...

Quote
I was also asked about Brad Peacock (Washington), who has posted outstanding numbers as a starter in Double-A this year after looking more like a one-pitch reliever in the Fall League last year. Peacock was 91-94 with an average curveball (he calls it a knuckle-curve, which isn't great news since so few pitchers can command that pitch) at 73-76 with break somewhere between 12/6 and 11/5. He threw one changeup at 81 mph, running it in to a right-handed hitter. He's a smaller guy with a lot of effort who really has to work to repeat his delivery at all and probably projects as a pen guy despite the knockout performance in the Eastern League.

This is ridiculous because Law is worried about what Peacock calls the pitch - as if he could command it better if it were a slurve or some other stupid word.

When it comes to minor league players, I just assume the national writers don't see most of the prospects enough to accurately judge them. They have an idea, but they aren't watching them consistently and people hate to "miss" a guy so if admitting they were wrong is a struggle. We'll see. Maybe Peacock is great, maybe not.

I find it funny that most call his curve a plus, but Law is worried because of the way Peacock describes the pitch. What a joke.

A knuckle-curve is one of the easiest pitches to recognize, so I imagine Law wasn't paying too much attention.

Perhaps someone should have linked Law to the Kilgore blog about Peacock's new delivery.  Maybe Keith Law should try to stay current before he writes.

Why would Law stay on top of updates pertaining to an irrelevant minor leaguer like Peacock who projects as a reliever when he can spend his time drooling over Pomeranz?

He gave up those four runs in the most projectable way I've ever seen!
