i have mixed feelings about this one.  Yes, as a Nats fan I'm happy the Phillies lost, especially at home.  But as a Nats fan, I also look at the Giants line-up and bullpen and wonder how the heck they are going to the WS and we lost 93 games.  Maybe we can contend next year if we get some combination of Lee, Greinke, and Garza.

How can you even compare us to the team that has the best pitching rotation in the league? Maybe we can contend next year if we get all of Lee, Greinke, and Garza.

I'm comparing our offense/pen.

They're a team built for the playoffs.  Now that pitching matters again they actually got there.

they are also getting way better than expected performances from the likes of Uribe, Ross, and Burrell.

Well, they can get away with mediocre offense because they have a great rotation and bullpen. If we ever have the best rotation in baseball, we'll be able to compete. We're not close to having the best rotation in baseball, so we aren't close to competing.

My favorite part of the game was the faces of all the Phillies fans sitting around dejected and worried after the HR and after that line-out double play.

I don't really hate all of the Phillies, but I wish every bit of misery on their fans.

What He Said!!!!

I wish I could have seen it on TV but I was at the Caps game last night and on my way home when it was won!  I did listen to the SAN FRAN radio version on my Droid with its AT BAT application.  Love it!!!

i will quietly hope that the Nationals replay the called 3rd strike on Howard every time he comes up to bat at every game in Nats park next season.

Sabean hit the jackpot this year.  At the end of August, I did a post comparing the Nats and the Giants offensive numbers, and it was scary how close they were on every stat.  Granted, they play in PacBell or whatever it is called now, but basic stats like AVG and OBP, advanced stats like wOBA; runs too. They surpassed us in September, but that really is a product of the rebuild by Sabean and the willingness of Bochy to drop failing players out of his line up.  Sanchez, Ross, Burrell were in season pick ups, Torres took over CF from Rowand, even though Rowand had the bigger contract, Rentaria was confined to the bench to let Uribe play, they shipped out Molina to let Posey play, and they were willing to swap out Panda when he became a liability, notwithstanding his national image.

Sabean has gotten much grief for the age of their roster over the years, but he kept enough of his young arms, and, to the extent that older players were undervalued in the FA market, made the smart move for guys like Huff and Uribe.  He should be Exec of the year, if the voters have their eyes open.

eh, Ruben got Halladay and Oswalt (granted the large contracts to everyone on the roster will be an albatross in a couple of years)

To be fair, these guys and a few of us did not think much of the Freddy Sanchez trade

So I wonder how playing the Giants will affect the Rangers' running game.  It's one thing to run on Posada, it's quite another to run on Posey.

Andrus will still try to run, as will Kinsler and maybe Cruz. It's their game, and, especially against lincecum and the bullpen, it is something they have to do.

They can steal Lincecum blind. Sanchez's read move looked pretty filthy the other day, even though it was a balk. (As an aside, I'll never understand why balks are not enforced correctly in MLB. Even RHPs all balk, tons of pitchers don't actually come set, etc.)

Name          SB   CS      SB%

Lincecum      27    3    90%
Sanchez       17    9    65%
Cain            19    10    66%

Reminds me of that rainy all-nighter in '06 when we mathematically eliminated them.  One of the high points of our franchise so far :-[
