This was going to be a difficult game to win  based on the state of the bullpen, unless they won by a wide margin.  A close game was going to be tough.  What they couldn't do was make really bad and obvious mistakes, like what Desmond and Escobar did.  The game got late and tight and Escobar and Desmond just FREAKED!

Don't let Barrett off the hook so easily.

True, I keep forgetting that the Nats had a 2-1 lead in the 8th inning. And that turd serves up a HR to the first batter. :? :bang:

Oh, no doubt.  But even with his mistake, ceteris paribus, we have a chance against the Cubs' bullpen.  The ending is likely the same but at least we have a fresh Taylor Jordan going

Barrett on a pegleg or Stammen going through rehab would be better than a fresh Taylor Jordan. He's crap.

He's pitched to a 2.63 FIP this year in AAA but okay.

Hopefully that will motivate them vs Lester tomorrow. Any reason why tomorrow isn't a day game?

Both teams have an off day and we are only going to Cincy. Cubs are staying at home.

Lol. I forgot games were decided by FIP nowadays. Yunesky Maya pitched to a 3.44 FIP in Syracuse one year. Strasburg has a FIP of 3.66 this year. Too bad that doesn't mean crap when they're getting hammered like a young Humphrey Bogart.

Trade Ian D. to Oakland. I want Clippard back!

I know you guys all hate Desmond, but this would be a TARD move.

Okay.  His ERA is even lower.  He's had a handful of bad starts in the MLB combined with a handful of good plus some.  Furthermore, last time he was in the bigs he was injured.

Two things that need to be shored up if we want to contend are our fundamentals and defense.

This team struggles at simple baseball 101. WTF was Escobar doing? And Desmond needs to eat that ball. His D is pathetic. I'd be all for Rizzo making a move to aquire Tulo. This team isn't going far with a SS who has committed 13 errors already.

If this team upgrades at SS defensively and works on our fundamental's they will be tough. But if Desmond keeps throwing balls away and we make stupid mistakes we wont be challenging anyone.

Keep Roark starting. He's the second-best on the team.

Trade Ian D and Strasburg for Buirns and Clippard.

Yes, this is one of those silly suggestions I used to hear of WFAN. However, put Espnosa at SS ans Uggla at 2B. Since I hate the way Espinosa hits, this is an emergency. Beside, I tolerated Eddie Brinkman all those years. Espi sometimes hits better than Eddie. Strasburg needs something drastic. The Nats need an OF who can hit and an 8th inning guy. If Trea Turner of Wilmer Diffo makes it, Espi back to the bench. He have him through 2017, and Uggla is free (Braves pay his salary). Maybe Rendon come back this season, and then Uggla becomes a reserve.

Essentially, with assistance from Escobar and Ron Barett.

As bad as Desmond's error was, the Cub hitter (Russel???) hit a bomb that shot the gap and the runner likely scored from first anyway.

Escobar's gaffe was more egregious because it was a mental error (inexplicable steal attempt) - and it came right after he had almost committed a different mental error (wandering off of second base with the ball still in play and in the shortstop's hands).

If Desmond eats the ball, the runner is still on first and the outfield is much deeper (no doubles).  They had to play in tight to try to throw the runner out from second.  If Desmond just shows the slightest bit of sense, the ball never hits the ground because Span moves a few feet to his left and catches the ball and runs back to the dugout for the top of the 10th.

As it was Span came within probably 10 feet of getting to the ball having to cover all that ground.
