Bally DFA'd by Tigers
« Topic Start: May 22, 2012, 10:38:33 PM »
As per MLBTR:

Tigers To Designate Collin Balester For Assignment

Rizzo?  Bring him back?  Better than Perry.

I'm actually interested in seeing how Cole Kimball comes back from his shoulder injury.  If his career isn't over that would awesome to have ANOTHER hard throwing reliever, especially with a wicked splitter.

Kimball was nasty. When does he come back?

Tough break for Bally.

Link to an article by Kilgore from March.

He will likely be back, but he may never be what he once was.  Many have come back fine but were in the twilight of their careers ala the Big Unit or Pedro.  Here is to hoping he comes back!

Umm... Is there *any* reason we wouldn't bring him back? He performed outstandingly for us, had a great reputation in the clubhouse, was loved by fans, and most importantly, I think he genuinely liked the franchise, fans and city. Wtf happened to cause a DFA? He's always been an above average reliever. Regardless, we better claim him yesterday. H-Rod, I'm looking at your roster spot.

really sorry to see this for Bally, hopefully we can get him back.  we certainly can use him at AAA if nowhere else.

He still has no options so if we claimed him, he would have to be on the 25 man OR DFA'd and make it through waivers.  Right now with Matheus out and Perry being the wet mop, I'd move Perry back down and nab Bally.  He certainly adds a familiar presence in the pen and he always grows that sweet 'stache!

I miss Bally!  I also don't really mind Perry, but he just isn't that good.  He still needs seasoning at AAA IMO and shouldn't have been brought up but we already have a slew of lefty relievers so Severino being the obvious call-up wouldn't have worked.

It makes too much sense to send Perry down for seasoning and pick up Bally which likely means we won't and Rizzo hates his aura.

They're pretty much the same pitcher, Perry just had options, Balester didn't.

Career xFIP

Perry - 4.64
Balester - 4.65

You and sportsfan are pretty much the same poster, SF just has his own avatar, you don't.

Career PPD:

SF -    23.456
Linty - 23.844

That's pretty much been established before that we're the same person, except for a few key differences.

Actually I think Linty was Sharp before Sharp was Sharp, Linty just learned to tone it down to fit in with the local yokels

Well he would be an Expos-nostalgia choice...he would join Bernadina, Desmond and Severino as a fourth link to the Expos years (chosen in 2004 draft, right after we picked Desmond).

I'd rather have the pitcher with options and the one that hasn't already been a huge failure here. Balester never lived up to potential and does not have the command to ever pitch successfully in the Majors. Perry is what he is, a AAA reliever who can fill in as the last guy in your MLB pen if needed but there are no high expectations for him which is fine.

On-topic, Bally was a victim of the options game, as others have said.  I really do hope he find success and sticks somewhere, but it's not going to be here.

Bally has a cool family, but he's just not very good - he's looking like a mop up reliever, and perry is here, and like everyone says, has options

There's a big difference - Linty can, from time-to-time, admit most of that crap is just that - crap.

Perry only has one option.
