If you don't sign your pick, you still lose their recommended slot money.

Wait, what does this mean? You can't just decide to not sign your 2nd round pick and throw all that money at the first rounder?

Correct.

If you don't sign your second round pick and his slot recommendation was $1 million dollars, you lose that amount from your "pool" to sign other players.

Yes. It's a terrible new system.

So as long as we're 5% under the cap we won't loose a draft pick. So our cap is really around 4.6 million.

1. Gioloto = 3.3-3.5 million
2-10 : We'll have 100K+ per pick the rest of the way which is the slot for any pick after the 10th round anyway.

unless number 2 laughs and you loose 530k towards Gioloto, and number 3 joins in the fun costing you another 300 leaving you right around slot for Gioloto

I just hate the idea of this whole new system, I think there will be a few Aaron crows in the next couple of years, but punting later rounds to get a first rounds a extra million seems like a bad idea

Go on...

I'm just basing this off another forum but supposedly Appel will want some money since he had turned down 6m from Houston? so he tumbled... The Pirates have around 3m to spend at that slot.

If Pirates were to exceed their pool by more than $1M, they'd get fined $1M+ & lose 1st-round picks in each of next 2 drafts.

I hadn't heard he turned down 6 million.

Losing TWO picks is such garbage, wow.

It's so, so incredibly stupid. Who is going to be enticed to leave football or other sports now? Totally cuts the balls off the draft -- it will, however make international signings much, much bigger.

Jesus Christ. Fined over a million, and lose two draft number one draft picks?!? What a joke. How on earth did the owners and players union ever agree to this clusterfreak? Who, other than the league, possibly favored this? The penalties are insane, and will lead to the first few picks for the next three or five years not signing. Jesus did we get lucky. If we signed Stras under this, we kissed our Harper pick away. More likely, we didn't get either Stras OR Harper under this crapfest. That's bad for baseball, period.

I'm not a fan of the new System either but if not for the new System Giolito wouldn't have fallen to us.

Rendon and Purke fell for the same reason (injury + expensive), he may have made it to us anyway

Yeah, but because of the new system, what are our chances of signing him? Just because he fell to us means crap, unless we sign him. And since the other teams didn't draft him, it means we have even less a chance of signing him. Or if we do sign him, then we are almost guaranteed to suffer these draconian penalties, losing draft picks in the future plus monetary penalties. So I don't see the upside.
