Gio didn't ever bat at Oakland, an AL team with a designated hitter (DH).  He talked about batting in a prior interview, determined to not embarrass himself.  Thus, the huge smile on his face, and a standing ovation for his first MLB hit.

random comment: The DH might help AL teams get free agent sluggers, but I wonder if the opportunity for a pitcher to hit helps NL teams get some free agent pitchers.  I mean, it wasn't a free agent signing but Gio certainly seemed excited to show what he could do at the plate, and I can see why...

by the way, is Gio running the bases in a jacket?  That's one of my favorite quirky early spring things.  Pitchers on base in jackets.

This Espinosa looks a lot like the more patient hitter I saw at Potomac and Harrisburg a few years ago.

What is the PC for Latos right now?

BTW, I think this might be my first post on this message board, though I've been reading for years.

Latos annoys me.  He's gotten several generous calls this game, needs to stop acting like a pouty nag.
