Harper could blow out his knee tripping on a curb. It's good to wait, I think.

But they still wouldn't have drafted him until tomorrow.

You don't want to give up any leverage in a negotiation.  Saying you're going to draft him weeks ahead of time says that you think no one else even comes close to being as good as him.  Even if it's for show, you can't give an inch.  Obviously we're drafting Harper, I never doubted it for a second.

But they wouldn't be in negotiations until Tuesday, at the earliest.  They would actually have to draft him first.

Technically, but there's been a subliminal negotiation going on for quite some time now.

How so?

He is already asking for more money than Strasburg, if the Nats made it seem like they "had to have" Harper, he would try to use that.  You have to remember Boras is an unrelenting d***, so the longer you keep him at bay the better.  But, I do agree with you that should have just said it earlier.  When they said two weeks ago they had their pick, everyone knew who it was.

They probably won't be in negotiations until August, but even so, by saying he's the number 1 pick well in advance, you're telling Boras that you're placing a very high value on him and not even considering someone else.  That will factor into any salary negotiation later down the line.

Well, we know Boras is gonna start by asking for more than the Nats gave to Strasburg.  Of course, he's not gonna get that much. What do y'all feel will be the number? I'd say 8 to 10 Million.

Nice shot of the catcher protection.   Man, has it changed over the years.

You have to give him more than he'd likely get by sitting out and waiting another year.

Honestly... when he's on your fastball/changeup... you have to go with a different pitch eventually.

As far as the players are concerned it is, unless Phillips starts it up again.  The fans don't need to let go of it, but the players need to move on.  They've got bigger issues to worry about.

I'm still looking for cats I knew from 8th grade (LOL).   I understand what you're sayin'.    Somewhere down the line someone will get another shot at him and they'll take it.

I'm really trying to hold my tongue on Nieves... but the man has no awareness behind the plate. He has to recognize what's working, and what's not.

Clippard throws four pitches... not two.

You have to realize that his changeup is not in top shape... He threw 21 pitches, only two were not a fastball or changeup.

Come on!

Not necessarily.  I actually think we have stronger leverage in these negotiations than we did last year.  First of all, if you pass on the Nationals, who are on the way up, you'll likely end up in a much smaller market next year with less exposure for endorsements and such.  Also, if you delay a year, that's one more year you have to wait until arbitration and free agency.  Also, Harper won't have as immediate impact on the team as Strasburg.  We likely won't see him until 2013.

No way Harper commands as much as Strasburg, as much as Boras wants to posture.  Remember, this is the guy who said he wanted $50 million for SS.  Best thing to do is ignore the whole thing until we sign him and save yourself the anguish.  Everything said in public is just posturing.
