Norris to Potomac & Rooney to Harrisburg
« Topic Start: July 15, 2009, 07:32:13 AM »
Derek Norris from Hagerstown to Potomac
Sean Rooney from Potomac to Harrisburg
Early reports are Javi Herrera has either retired or been released from Harrisburg.

Official word should be out some time this week (likely before Harrisburg gets started after the All-Star break)

Still the same as it's been. Needs work. His new manager in Potomac, Trent Jewett, is another former catcher (Matt LeCroy is maanger in Hagerstown). Maybe he'll pick something new up in Woodbridge.

People are obsessing too much about Derek's work behind the plate. 10% chance, at best, that he hits the big leagues as a catcher.

What position would he play instead of catcher?

He's athletic enough to play a corner OF position as well as first base.

He played 3B in HS prior to shifting behind the plate

I know it's getting ahead of ourselves, but I'm dreaming of Harper and Norris manning the corner OF positions and batting 3/4 for as long as possible.  They could be a pretty amazing combo.

Norris is throwing out 39% of runners in Hagerstown. Not bad.

Brian, why is Adam Carr continuing to start games for Potomac? Why are they wasting starts on him? Hagerstown's rotation is so overloaded with starters that Peacock had to pitch out of the pen yesterday. Frias should have been promoted to Potomac.

Congrats to Rooney and Norris.  Rooney has been kid clutch for the P-Nats the last few months.  Norris should replace Rooney's bat at Potomac.  I think Norris has better than a 10% chance of becoming a MLB catcher at this point, he still has lots of time to develop at the position.  I don't see him playing first with his height, but he could definitely fit in at 3B or one of the corner positions.

almost got pulled in the 2nd inning.  Just got taken out in the 4th inning in place of Pecina.

I am trying to get a scouting report on Frias right now from the Hagerstown announcers...

It's one start. Someone needs to fill a spot in Potomac's rotation.

They are in 1st place. Adam Carf shouldn't be on the team let alone making starts.

It's a bullpen game, he is just the first pitcher to throw in the game.

I think they expect Willems to be back soon (at least according to quotes Menhart made a little over a week ago), in which case promoting Frias for a spot start wouldn't make much sense.

So the rotation would be:

Mandel
Atwood
Milone
Engles
Willems

That decent CS % masks two of Norris's most glaring deficiencies:

1. When he doesn't manage to throw out baserunners, he often misses his throws entirely
2. He can't block balls that are far out of the zone

Norris probably won't stick as a catcher, but it doesn't really matter.  He's most likely the best bat we've had in our minors since Zimmerman got his cup of coffee in '05.

Looks like the Norris intel I got was not correct. Rooney is headed to Harrisburg but he will not be replaced by Norris. This was not a change of mind, it was incorrect information from the start.
