The Padres are asking their fans to pick the throwback jersey they will wear this year. They are all terrible, IMO.

Three great jerseys.  I picked 1978 WHITE for them.

Agreed. They look like rags from some ghetto softball beer league.

Bobby Howry signs with AZ for 1 year, $2m plus option.  One fewer quality veteran MR option for us, but I think I'm content to go with Clippard as the primary RH set up guy.

Holliday is asking for $18 million a year for 5 years (Bay got 16.5).

Would anyone seriously be insane enough to commit that kind of money to him?

It's a thin market, those guys were the best available.  Lucky for them.

How bad are the Houston Astros?
Pirates fans feel sorry for them.

why did Boston sign Beltre?

They now field a pretty kickass infield defense.  And because Lowell is shot for 2010.

And they're still trying to move Lowell.

Offensively, Beltre moves from a park that murders righties to one that is righty friendly.  He's had a big home negative / away positive split the past few years.  I have not looked at his spray chart lately, so I don't know if he's a dead pull guy (I've seen people say yes and no, and have nto seen him enough to give a worthwhile opinion), but even if he sprays the ball a bit, Fenway helps righties with a reachable wall for doubles, a big gap in right center, and that weird RF fence that allows for flare/slices to wrap the Pesky Pole or scoot down the line.

By UZR last year, then he is 25 runs better than Lowell.  One year result, but that's a lot.

The big thing that is going on is that, after a couple of years of declining payroll, the Red Sox are spending again and likely to pay luxury tax.  They should have a payrol lin the $180M range.  They have more than $50m coming off the books next year, before they try to resign Beckett and Martinez.

They're going to make a hard run at Mauer.

What do you do with Martinez then? He's nearly Mauer's offensive equal. Outside of this years power surge for Mauer, they are nearly equal in the OPS department.

Mauer is the better overall player... but I can't see them dumping Martinez like that.

Really just passing along speculation this morning I heard driving in (XM 175, Buck Martinez)

Mauer will be 27, Martinez 31.

Per BP, Rank among all catchers, VORP:

2007  Martinez 2   +52.5
        Mauer  4      +30.5

2008  Mauer  1     +55.9
         Martinez 28  +4.7

2009  Mauer   1     +91.0
        Martinez  2   +44.6

Well, for whatever reason, the Red Sox will throw out 2008.  Reading on SoSH, they often discount what they think is an aberrational bad year. Sometimes it works OK (Lowell's 2005), sometimes it does not (Lugo's post TB decline with the Dodgers).  I don't think they can beat the NYY for Mauer if the NYY decide Montero cannot be the catcher of the future.  Also, Mauer could resign with the Twins.  Either way, they try to bring back Martinez.

I think Mauer resigns with the Twins for something like 8 years, 160 mil and then the Twins spend like 50 mil on the rest of their team.

Stephen Lombardozzi is now a roving infield instructor in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. After batting .412 in the 1987 World Series for the Twins, Lombardozzi became the person with the longest last name to hit a home run in the Series (until Doug Mientkiewicz).

His son, Stephen Lombardozzi jr, is, of course, a member of the Washington Nationals farm system.

Yeah Victor was hurt in 2008. As was Hafner and my hopes and dreams; but that's for another day.

But I agree with the Sox, they definitely should not look at 2008 as a typical year for him.

Yankees and Mets officially out of the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes.

Looking like Marlins, Blue Jays, or Angels.

I think the Jays are the best fit: his family can move to Canada, and their young pitching/system would be sick.
