so Last.fm..apparently you only have to pay for the service if you live outside of the US, UK, and Germany.

and it points you to Amazon mp3 when you want to buy the songs you stream.

so far it is really nice, and my Cricket Broadband can handle it, so that's a plus.

gonna download Winamp and try it out.

according to Ronny it does, I'm taking his word for it.

seems it comes with 50 free music downloads from emusic, so, that's a plus.

Emusic is great, I do 1 month, then cancel, and then they offer me more and more free downloads to come back. I got 75 free plus 25 more for next month this time for 20 bucks (125 total).

I generally use whatever's most convenient and will play whatever these days usually means WMP12, followed by VLC (or MPC-HC for video, VLC has some weird artifacting under windows 7 due to the way it renders video). The ability to open ISOs as files with VLC has always been a nice convenience.

Does WinAmp still look like it did 10 years ago, or have they changed it?

they've updated the skins, but it is still the same basic look...only with more features and new skins. but the basic design of the player hasn't changed very much.

I download a Codec Pack (usually K-Lite) and that enables me to use pretty much any media player to play anything.

Bonk Encoder - comes built in with CDparanoia, so they say. Perfect rips on less than perfect disks so far. Nice.

Funny you mention CDParanoia again - I recently learned that the ripping app I used to use when I still owned CDs, CDEx (which has been around for years) has a paranoia mode ported directly from CDParanoia.

The first one I downloaded was CDEx, and I was shocked to find out that it included CDparanoia. The cdParanoia in Bonk is more configurable, but it's still opaque. I wish these programs would return the CD paranoia smileys (something like

for all OK, and

for a serious scratch).

No but I certainly could have used that at my last job. Granted there was a lot of down-time there, and I was mostly making the tutorials as references for myself, so it didn't matter much. Attempting to document everything at my current job would be a futile effort.

You're right about the speed thing. I've heard that claim before and I just don't see it. If anything, FF seems faster to me (at least on the sites I surf) because it doesn't reload cached files as overzealously as chrome seems to. Chrome also seems to "hang" on connecting to some sites for me. Obviously Chrome launches faster, but I usually have a browser open most of the day anyway, so except on lower-end hardware I just don't see this as a big selling point.

Like you said, personal preference. Neither browser really has anything that the other doesn't, or won't soon have. Firefox has a lead on that, but once an official version of Chrome with easy extensions is out for a while and their community extension support picks up, it really will be a wash for the most part.

I'm wondering when they are going to move Extensions off of the "Dev" Channel onto the "Stable" channel.

once they do that, I will go back to stable releases of Chrome.

so the good part is that you can search for an artist, dump it to a playlist, and run with it.

The bad part is the site software seems awfully screwy - 9 out of 10 searches return a blank screen. WTF?

I think the ifference is that last.fm only has songs that are licensed for streaming (as far as I can tell), where imeem has user uploaded songs that are from the entire catalog of the contracted labels.

I have a Napster subscription, but songs that are missing from Napster are in imeem. I'll look later and see if they are in last.fm.

Napster is next to free, still pays residuals, great quality, and doesn't take up any hard drive space.

It's also 100% legal and virus free.

priceless? there are no viruses in frostwire. none. I have been using it for years and run several virus scans and have never detected anything. I disable all outgoing sharing so no one uploads off of my crap. All of the songs are scanned for viruses when they are downloaded.

millions of people use frostwire. what, are they going to arrest all of them?
