I would rather see Stammen be the closer then Lidge. As you said, Lidge as a 7th inning guy (so long as the game is not tied) would not be a bad idea. Its just I don't trust Lidge to get the saves considering the fact that the offense is only giving the pitching staff 1-2 run leads to work with.

Clippard + Stammen for 8th/9th inning duty seems to be the best idea. I would let either one have 2 innings to work with to be honest.

i'm not sure taking stammen out of a role that he's thrived in would make a lot of sense.   I'm guessing H-Rod gets the majority of chances going forward.

You never know until you find out. The dude has been getting K's left and right and just throws nothing but strikes. It would just be interesting to see if he could handle a closer role. Anything that doesn't involve Brad Lidge blowing wins for guys.

The thing that jumps out at me when I watch Lidge is that they're not swinging at his slider.  His slider is his out pitch,  if they're not swinging at his slider he's not going to get outs.  What I can't tell for sure is, is his slider not as good as it was, or is it the case that because his fastball has slowed down a tick, batters have that extra instant to recognize the slider.  And they can sit on a fastball every pitch, and that means more hits.

If it's the first, he's not going to be successful until he regains his slider. If it's the second, he's not going to be successful until he regains his speed.

I think he's more valuable now getting in two innings while the game is still up for grabs

I like Stammen in his long relief role. Your starter struggles and you go to Stammen for 2-3 innings. For those innings he keeps you in the game. You get a lead. Hand it over to Clippard and HRod.

The alternative is to make Gorzo the primary long relief pitcher. We saw how that ends up.

Ryan Perry.  Relief pitcher currently in the minors.  Same type of hard throwing reliever the Nats have been going after recently.

If Lidge has Vertigo, can't we just move him to the DL and call up someone?

Comparing his pitch data from this season to his lights out 2008 season, it seems that three major differences are apparent thus far:

1.  He is throwing more sliders (57% vs 51% in 2008), but the amount of sliders going for strikes and the amount hitters are swinging at are nearly identical.  The notable difference is that less batters are swinging and missing at the slider for about an 8% difference in WHIFF% (huge difference).  That difference in WHIFF% has translated to sliders put in play, which is about 8% greater between the two seasons.

2.  Hitters are swinging at his fastball less often, a difference of about 13%, despite the fact that he has thrown sliders for strikes 58% of the time, compared to 55% in 2008.

3.  His changeup, which he used 5.3% of the time in 2008, has yet to be used at all this season.  In 2008, he was able to get batters to swing and miss at that pitch 15% of the time.

So, what it seems to me is that hitters are sitting on his slider, knowing that he is going to use it a lot and figuring out that it is not as good of a pitch as it once was.  It seems that he has either loss confidence in his change up completely, as he only threw 5 of them last season and that the change may have been an important part in keeping batters just enough off guard to allow for his fastball and slider to be effective.

I just looked at the Syracuse staff, and there's no "someone". Leading pitcher is a guy named Yunesky Maya.

I think the Nats are about two years from having good AAA pitching...

Or this guy  named Lannan. I'm pretty sure he'd love to be the long reliever/ground ball specialist for the Nats right now. And, give it some time, soon Wang will be on the DL. Again.

Why don't they tell him that, after every pitch, he needs to check the baserunner at first?  It's so easy to steal off this guy.

He's not used to having baserunners. There was a point where he was pretty automatic

He just cost us 2 games in a row.  He needs to be released tonight after the game.  He is no longer the pitcher he used to be.

The two were seeing eye singles, just unfortunate. No excuse for not knowing how to hold a runner.

No idea why he was left in to face Tex.
