I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have made it without it.  They did a segment on that sports science show a year or two ago on CSN disproving sliding slows you down (the conclusion was that it can and can't, but it depends on different factors).

So if you slide it may or may not slow you down but if you don't slide there is no question that it can't slow you down.

Right, but FP pointed out a major point that they covered, arm length is a large factor, which Werth has plenty of.  Also, this is mindfacting, but over time I have noticed the umps giving the safe call to sliders more often than those that run through.  I'm not saying slide all the time or even some times, but a few select times like a few seconds ago was good.
