i watched it ... few of the hits were hit pretty well (either homer, off the wall) ... but you can tell the guy is special.  once he figures it out, he's definitely a #3-4 starter.

Karns with a nice start last night: 8 IP 3 H 2 ER 3 BB 7 K (Win).

His last 5 starts: 29.1 IP 13 H 5 ER 11 BB 32 K (3-0, 1.53 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 9.81 K/9)

I think his stuff gives him a better chance than Taylor Jordan of contributing to the Nationals long term.

karns has a better fastball/curve, but only has those two pitches right now.

jordan pitches to contact with the sinker and slider, his change has really developed.

good problem to have.

Karns clocks in at #3 on this week's BA Hot Sheet

Quote
No. 3 Nate Karns, rhp, Nationals
Team: Double-A Harrisburg (Eastern)
Age: 25
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 1.93, 14 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 16 SO, 5 BB

The Scoop: Karns was tagged with a 7.50 ERA in three starts for the Nationals in late May and early June before being sent back to Harrisburg. Despite those struggles, the experience of facing big league hitters appears to have served him well. In six starts since his return to the Eastern League on June 20, he’s gone 3-1, 1.62, owning the fourth-best ERA in the EL over that span. He logged his longest outing of the year on Thursday, going eight innings and allowing just two runs on three hits against Akron.

Karns' floor seems to be 7th/8th inning power reliever. With the upside of maybe #3 SP.

Jordan's upside seems pretty limited. #5 SP at best and more than likely a long reliever.

BP:
Quote
5. Nate Karns
Position: RHP
DOB: 11/25/1987
Height/Weight: 6’5’’ 230 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Acquired: 12th round, 2009 draft, Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX)
2012 Stats: 2.03 ERA (44.1 IP, 23 H, 61 K, 21 BB) at Low-A Hagerstown; 2.26 ERA
 (71.2 IP, 47 H, 87 K, 26 BB) at High-A Potomac
The Tools: 6+ FB; 6+ CB;

What Happened in 2012: Injuries had sapped Karns’ progress leading up to the 2012 season, but a lucky bout with health propelled the big righty up prospect lists with a very strong two-level performance.

Strengths: Tall, physical pitcher; creates good angle to the plate and throws downhill; fastball works in the 92-95 range; touches higher; good weight; can pound low zone; curveball is true plus pitch; might project even higher; heavy vertical action; true bat-missing weapon; hard to adjust the bat to the plane; attacks and competes.

Weaknesses: He’s 25 years old; behind developmental curve; can repeat, but delivery has some effort; mostly a two-pitch type; changeup gets over, but is below average at present; can throw strikes, but overall command is loose.

Overall Future Potential: High 5; no. 3 starter

Thought I saw that somewhere...

Pitched last night in Trenton and got shelled by a lineup of mostly non-prospects.

They only play 7 innings?

It was a doubleheader, two 7 inning games.

I listened to the game on the Flying Squirrels radio station, and the Richmond broadcasters seemed very impressed by Karns' stuff.  They were also really bummed because the Squirrels were swept in a must-win doubleheader and fell to fourth.   :D

I like listening to the other teams' broadcasts because the Harrisburg guy has a monotone voice.  It's also informative to hear what the opposing teams' broadcasters think of the players.  They kept calling Burns a nuisance and were impressed by Goodwin's defense.

When minor leagues do double headers, they only play 7 innings.
