Could Desmond and Espinosa play together?
« Topic Start: April 06, 2010, 11:06:05 PM »
Will it be possible to move either Desmond or Espinosa to second, or do we have two good prospects that play the same position?

My understanding the answer to those questions is yes.

I think I read it would be Desmond to second and that is the idea.

I've seen recentl speculation that it would be Espinosa to 2nd, keep Desmond at short.

No, one of our esteemed beat writers posted it, but I have no idea which one nor the energy to prove it.

One would think minor league appearances by Espinosa at 2B would prove Tom's theory.

Either one could play 2nd base -Espinosa has been known to play 2B in a few games at Potomac Nationals.
Both are quick, agile, and flexible. The pairing of those two as SS and 2B could very well be a ideal combination to bring strength to that part of the playing field.

How far along is Dan-E anyway? Will we see him in September like Desmond last year?

Right.  A leading indicator of things to come.

How many games has Espinosa played at second?  I see just one as part of a late game swap.

I'm talking about the upcoming season.  I think he's been a SS pretty much all his recent career.

Oh ok, but either way I wasn't trying to question the speculation, I agree that it is out there about him moving to second.  I was just curious if anyone actually knew how many games he played at second.  I could only find one game where he did, but maybe others who have been at more Potomac games than I may know of more.

I'm sure the FO/organization will have Espinosa playing some 2B this season, you can count on that.

If Desmond pans out this year ... it's his job.  Espinosa/Kobernus will compete for 2B role.  Good problem to have.

Absolutely.  I am really excited to see how Michael Taylor and Roberto Perez do in their first full pro season as well.  If two of Kobernus/Espinosa/Taylor/Perez pan out, then the middle infield situation for the future could look pretty damn good.

Yup.  And you know Zim isn't going anywhere.  And whoever is manning the other corner (whether it's Dunn or Marrero who had a pretty darn good year last year and has a big one forthcoming), we will have a solid infield.

That's why a lot of us are  for Desmond to really take advantage of this opportunity.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I expect the infield to end up with Espinosa at short and most likely Desmond at 2d.  If Desmond make himself into an OK fielder at short and can hit .265, I expect him to stick at SS.  If he can't, then his bat may play well at 2d.  As for Espinosa, if he is not the SS, I'm not sure he hits enough for 2d. Kobernus could push him aside.  Ranking the infields, I'd say Espinosa 6 / Desmond 4 is the most likely, then Desmond 6 / kobernus 4 next, and Desmond 6 / Espinosa 4 the least likely.
