2013 Rotation.

1. Strasburg
2. Greinke
3. Zimmermann
4. Ross
5. Gio

If we don't win the World Series with that rotation and our lineup, fire everybody.

I hope this FO has enough balls and smarts to sign one of the good FA pitchers. It'd make us even nastier.

Won't matter if we keep swinging for the fences every at bat.

Hopefully that would change if we change hitting coaches.  It seems that is the mentality Eckstein instilled into the players.

Swing for the fences does work over a long season because you face enough inferior pitching that doesn't have command that you will run into HR's nightly. As seen in the playoffs, you get a lot less chances to "run into one" against quality pitching.

Agreed. Definitely time for a change there.

While the wounds are still fresh... it's going to be hard to find fault with Eckstein after the team scored the second most runs in Nationals history this season... with only the 2006 team scoring more.

First off, we have to find a manager.  If Davey wants to keep managing, fine. But we need to start thinking about his successor.

Second, dangle Morse to an AL team needing a DH. I love Beast Mode, but healthy is not his strongsuit. Couple that with terrible defense in LF and it may be time to move him. Maybe find a replacement for Jackson. The Red Sox, Rays, A's, Rangers, and Mariners could all be potential trade targets.

Third, open competition at second base between Espinosa, Lombo, and Rendon. This means Rendon needs to move to second NOW. Either that or LF. Third base isn't open until Laroche & Morse are both gone and we can convince Zim that it's better for his shoulder if he moves over there.

Sign BJ Upton to a 4 year deal. Power, stolen bases, good defense. Move him to CF, Harper to RF, Werth to LF. Much better defensively. Offensively, maybe a slight reduction, but not much. The defense would more than make up for the slight drop in offense.

That's about it. If a bullpen arms becomes available, maybe. But I think a lot of our bullpen troubles stemmed from starting pitching not going very deep in to games.

Right, for all the heat Eck got over the past few years he deserves some credit for the performance this year.

That's what I thought.  Go for Haren first before making another Gio-like trade.

I can't disagree with any of that. Good post Slate.

Trade Morse for a hard throwing, cost controlled reliever.  Someone like the Rosenthal kid the Cards have.  Like what HRod was supposed to be.

Then sign one of Bourn, BJ Upton, or Victorino.  Give Lombardozzi and Tyler Moore spots on the bench next year.  Bring back one of Corey Brown or Bernadina.  Maybe both.

If they re-sign LaRoche, don't do it for any longer than 2 years.  3rd year should be a team option.

I'd bring back Edwin Jackson.  He was solid in the 4/5 spot.  Otherwise, Dan Haren sounds good on a 1 year, $10 mil deal like Edwin got last offseason.

Madson, Soria, Valverde might be good signs for the bullpen.  Not sure what to do with Burnett.

Espinosa should be dumped for a bag of chips.

Annibal Sanchez, Shawn Marcum, Guthrie, Dempster among the options.

I would love to get some Doritos but Rizzo will probably be lucky to get Grandma Utzs.

1: Cut Edwin loose. He's not consistent enough to be on a good team, especially when Lannan could probably do what he does for way less.
2: Back end of bullpen help. Broxton, Uehara, and Madson are good options.
3: Bring Laroche back on a two year deal.
4: Trade Morse. Tyler Moore is a better option at this point. Yeah, he's a big lumbering oaf in the outfield like Morse, but he can be shifted to first when Laroche's new contract is up, thus clearing left for Harper and opening up center for whichever CF prospect pans out.
5: New starter. I would be okay with Lannan, but I have a feeling it won't be that simple. Haren is a former D-Back, so I can see Rizzo signing him to an Edwin type deal. I can also see them offering Greinke the moon. Seriously. I could totally see that happening.
6: Leave Danny alone. Keep Lombo around just in case, but let's give Danny another shot.
7: That's pretty much it. The rest will come about naturally as our young guys gain more experience.
