Discovery is coming
« Topic Start: April 12, 2012, 10:42:56 PM »
The Smithsonian has released a list of good viewing sites for Tuesday's D.C. fly-over of the Space Shuttle Discovery on its way to landing at Dulles Airport.  It will circle the D.C. area between 10-11, including a flyover over the national mall.

Details:

Sudley Plantation on Rt. 28 will open for parking for $10.  Udvar-Hazy's parking lot will open at 8 AM.

Discovery is en-route from FL.  Should be over D.C. in the next hour.

That's pretty neat.

Are they putting it in a museum?

didn't get to see it - i'm way too far west of the city.

Yes, Udvar-Hazy is a "must see" attraction in the area.  They are replacing the Enterprise with the Discovery.  They also have an SR-71, SST, and the first boeing passenger jet along with a couple of hundred other attractions.  And if you really like Udvar-Hazy, take a road-trip to the U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH, it's about 4x the size of UH and features both a B1 and B2, along with several retired Air Force 1's (including the one that brought home Kennedy from Dallas).

I went to the hill by the Netherlands Carillon. I have over 300 pictures to sort through, but here are some of the good ones. Looks like Kevrock's photo further up the thread was probably taken at the same time as one of these, just from a different angle.

May be another opportunity to watch a shuttle flypast out near Dulles on Monday, when they are scheduled to fly Enterprise to New York for eventual delivery to the Intrepid Museum, where she will be displayed next to Concorde G-BOAD.
