breaking in a glove
« Topic Start: February 20, 2012, 10:33:16 AM »
What do you guys recommend to break in a new baseball glove?  I've heard everything from baking it, to oiling it, putting a softball inside, and rubber-banding it, to doing nothing (just using it).

I just used mine, but I know some people who like to oil theirs.  Never heard of baking it before

I've work some with leather products.  I would not do anything to it that dries the leather.  So I would not bake it.  A good leather oil would be good and can probably be found at any shoe store.  After oiling it, it will be a little more flexable and that's a good time to put a ball in it overnight.

Always wrapped a ball in it, rubber banded it up and baked it.

Also helps to use some shaving cream on the leather as well.

there are  few sites that suggest baking it for 15 minutes or so, then rubbing in oil, putting a softball inside, and wrapping it tightly with string or a rubber band.

I always keep a ball in mine but it's more so I don't forget where the ball is.

I've heard of oiling it, and the ball and rubberhand.

Go to a sports store.  There's a certain kind of oil they sell for gloves.  Read what the directions on the back says.  I vaguely recall Neatsfoot oil?  Not sure though.

I have also heard of parking a car on it overnight, but haven't tried that approach myself.

Why not go to one of the player's twitter account and ask how they condition their glove?  Couldn't hurt.

Because their response will be "It came broken in from the factory".

They get all the breaks! Not only are their paid to play, they get the best equipment too! :P

Break in a glove? Use it!

Don't have time to use it? Fake it. Go to Home Depot, buy a hammer replacement handle, then get a ball, duct tape the ball to the hammer handle. Work the mitt.

Run over it a couple of times with a car.

I've heard some crazy things growing up.  One of the was to dip it in bucket of car oil and hang it up for a month.

Mink oil, keep a ball in the pocket and rubberband it, play catch often.

Have a catch with anyone who will throw with you - it's the best way.  When the mitt starts to dry out, use Neatsfoot Oil.

that's what I bought.  Played catch with my son today, then rubbed in the oil into the palm/crease, then rubberbanded it with a softball inside.
