All this without Zimm and, for the most part, Morse. Not bad. Ankiel and LaRoche are doing okay.

I like Ankiel and Laroche. Bring up the Shark!

I have to wonder how long Stairs sticks around.  I just don't think most NL teams, the Nats included, have the luxury of having enough roster space to burn a spot on him.  In a crucial game, if he does come in to PH and gets on base, then you most likely have to run for him, so you burn two bench players just like that.

Wonder if he'll get fined for that.

Look at Matt Stairs' # aganst Halladay.  He's had success against him.  The bigger indictment is that I just don't think he was prepared to play.  That's inexcusable for a pinch hitter to not be ready to play at the end of a game.

I think he had checked out already, after the team hadn't scored in the first eight innings and didn't think he'd play tonight.

Ew...hell, the two players who've had the most success against Halladay are the ones who screwed us in the 9th.  >:(

I think Matt Stairs is always anticipating an at bat late. That's pretty much the only time he gets at bats.

IDK what he was looking at... maybe what the rest of the Nats were looking at for the first 8 innings. Halladay is that good, and it's not always obvious why on television. Maybe he just froze.

Edit: Regardless, it was unacceptable to be frozen in that situation, obviously.

The Nats showed the nation on ESPN that they'll fight you the whole way. Lots of teams would have packed it in early. Anybody who says that they would have preferred that we lost 3-0 and went quietly in the 9th is nuts. I mean, really nuts.

FYI, John Lannan's ERA went down tonight and Roy Halladay's went up.

He admits he doesn't prepare, no cage, video, nothing. He just walks out and is fat.

I feel good about our chances tomorrow.  This one doesn't hurt as bad as the florida losses.  Let's get 'em tomorrow.

I'm still baffled as to why Desmond can't get a hit at home

Really. That's weird in today's game. But he's been in the majors for a million years. But I wouldn't recommend it to you young kids out there reading this.

I think Derek Lowe, Tommy Hanson, Tim Hudson and Roy Halladay have a lot to do that.  the only really sub par starter we've faced at home has been Blanton.  He'll be fine.

Have they interviewed Stairs or Pudge yet?  Looking back and thinking about this game, this was not a bad loss in any sense going up against Halladay.  But it was there to steal right at the end and the two guys with the most experience on the team and with the best histories against Halladay at the plate.  I think you just have to appreciate Halladay's genius there and not get too caught up in it.  They did well enough battling back and showing some life.

We lost the game pretty early on with mistakes - Desmond error(s) and Lannan hitting Howard with the bases loaded - and falling behind Halladay.  Even if it was only 3-0 it felt like we were down a lot more.

Still - you'd hope our 'professional hitter' and 'HOF catcher' would at least get a swing or two in before going down.
