Capital Weather Gang's NatCast has 'Gotta wonder if attendance will take a hit on a day like this. At least you're not playing? Seek shade, cold drinks and A/C when possible!' - 102-105 at first pitch, 97-100 by ninth inning, 10% chance of rain.

weather.com is showing heat index of 104-106 over those periods.

Thankfully TBSITH is under shade from 14.30 onward.

(And of course after this series is up the highs get down to the 80's - but that's the All-Star break and then a Nats away trip at Miami...we just can't catch a break from the weatherman!)

Glad I don't have tickets for this game today and thinking we might bail on the game tomorrow.  There are over 100 tickets listed on StubHub for $.49 and hundreds more for under a dollar.  If they don't cancel the photo thing on the field there might be more players than fans there.

Full StubHub interactive map for today: http://www.stubhub.com/washington-nationals-tickets/nationals-vs-rockies-7-7-2012-2536489/ - there are a pair in my section in row G going for $4 each, and even some tickets in the dugout boxes are priced in the 30's - 4,438 tickets available total (almost 11% of ballpark capacity).

Meh, if the players can play on the field, how bad can it be sitting on your ass in a seat (or hanging in the concourse in the shade).  At least it won't be an enemy crowd invasion.

Where did you get your dorky fan ?

Got it a few years ago, I forget.  A lot of places have them or similar.  Try Walgreens or Bruce's Variety in Bethesda, Giant or a Sports store.

Mathguy - our friend had one the other day and was spraying everyone in our section, which was nice.  We really need to get her on the board!

FOX once again has the exclusive rights to the 7:00-10:00 window, hence another late afternoon game in extremely dangerous conditions.  This forces east coast teams to start between 1:00 and 4:00, and central time zone teams (where it's baking as well) to start no later than 3:00.  I hope MLB rethinks this arrangement for next season.  Good thing this is the last week of FOX monopolizing prime time, as they go back to their standard 4:00-7:00 window after the break.

On Field Photo Day!  Who's with me?!  Wilting.  With a towel around my neck and one of those dorky spray bottle fans.

I really want to go, and I have tickets for today, but I'll probably bail.  Too bad they probably won't let you leave and re-enter, forcing people to hang around in the heat for three hours before the start of the game.  I still may do the photo thing and then just head home.

Ah, thanks, I was wondering what the backstory was here.  Well, I'll just add this to the (lengthy) list of reasons why I hate FOX.

But this gives all the matchgoers in markets not in Fox's prime-time rotation for today a 'Fair and Balanced' opportunity to get heat-stroke.

Capital Weather Gang's NatCast has 'We're closing out the first half of the season on a hot note - hopefully the Nats do the same. Strong storms may threaten by the later innings so keep an eye on the sky.' - temperatures in mid-90's at first pitch, upper 90's by ninth inning, 40% chance of rain.

...oh well, beats triple digits...and with the earlier start than yesterday (= more open sun exposure; even TBSITH will be in the open for an hour after first pitch) I'm not expecting much more of a turn-out than yesterday (StubHub right now has 2,874 tickets available starting at just 25 cents).

As far as rain: weather.com's hourly forecasts have the chance at 10% through 14.00, then increasing to 20% at 15.00 and 45% at 16.00, then levelling to 40% through 21.00.

If the pitchers work fast and there aren't a lot of big innings, we may be able to avoid a rain delay.

In a season of ugly giveaways we have a new contender for the worst freebie yet.  This one fits right in with the opening day hat.  Fugly.

The beer mug on the other hand looks great.  Of course it will be the same thin plastic crap as the giveaways from the past couple years that crack if left untouched on the shelf.

Taking a peek at our upcoming Mets/Braves homestand, per weather.com:

Tuesday 17th vs Mets, 19.05 (Detwiler vs Niese) - high 101, low 81, 10% chance of rain
Wednesday 18th vs Mets, 19.05 (Zimmermann vs Young) - high 98, low 81, 30% chance of rain
Thursday 19th vs Mets, 12.35 (Gonzalez vs Dickey) - high 86, low 76, 30% chance of rain
Friday 20th vs Braves, 19.05 (Strasburg vs Hanson) - high 88, low 74, 30% chance of rain
Saturday 21st vs Braves, 13.05 (Jackson vs Sheets) and 19.05 (TBD vs TBD) - high 87, low 72, 30% chance of rain
Sunday 22nd vs Braves, 13.35 (TBD vs Jurrjens) - high 88, low 74, 10% chance of rain

Planning on taking all these in except possibly the evening fixture Saturday (don't really like these non-doubleheader doubleheaders - all that time between matches with no place to go/eat just isn't my bag).

---

EDIT: Weather forecasts and pitching match-ups updated Monday 16th July at 08.05.

Tempting, although if I do go to just one it'd probably be the afternoon one - I've always liked afternoon baseball, something we don't seem to get as much of here as at some MLB clubs (and TBSITH is under shade from about 14.30 onward so it won't be nonstop broiling).

On the other hand, with the concert the Metrorail ride home after the later match might be a bit less crowded...I'll just play it by ear when the day comes - you never know, the first match match might go extra innings or something....

I'll only be making it to 4 games this next series, day games in July are my least favorite.

Now fully updated:

Taking a peek at our upcoming Mets/Braves homestand, per weather.com:

Tuesday 17th vs Mets, 19.05 (Detwiler vs Niese) - high 101, low 82, 10% chance of rain
Wednesday 18th vs Mets, 19.05 (Zimmermann vs Young) - high 100, low 81, 40% chance of rain
Thursday 19th vs Mets, 12.35 (Gonzalez vs Dickey) - high 90, low 77, 50% chance of rain
Friday 20th vs Braves, 19.05 (Strasburg vs Hanson) - high 81, low 72, 40% chance of rain
Saturday 21st vs Braves, 13.05 (Jackson vs Sheets*) and 19.05 (Lannan vs Jurrjens) - high 84, low 71, 10% chance of rain
Sunday 22nd vs Braves, 13.35 (Detwiler vs Sheets*) - high 88, low 74, 10% chance of rain

*This is per ESPN.com as of right now and would, I think, simply have to be revised (a pitcher on only his second start since returning to action after two years, pitching on no rest, in the midst of a hot division race?). Saturday night and Sunday pitchers not yet confirmed on Nats' site.

---

So far Metro is only showing track work on the Red line (Bethesda and Medical Centre stations closed for 'Rail welding, fastener upgrades, tunnel repair, grout work', with buses replacing trains between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor)...but per recent precedent we'll need to wait till their Thursday announcement for whatever surprises they may spring during what should be quite a heavy-drawing weekend Braves series.

Damn them and their 12 start. On a weekday. On July.

Heat? Not a chance I go. Traffic? Uhh... double infinite chance I don't go? Then and the 1 on Saturday. More heat and sun. The night they have a concert. Like 10 hours later? Almost half these games in the middle of July are day games. Stupid. Just stupid.

But then I was viewing the Cubs home schedule. 51 day games. Out of 81. That's just crazy. Even factoring in cooler weather. Yeah, groovy. It's a throwback to old days without lights. Guess what, we have a crazy new thing called electricity. People work. What person who isn't retired or homeless would buy STs?

Although that would be pretty cool. Homeless dude spends several grand a year. Fired by skipping work for Cub games, he begs outside Wrigley for ST money. Forgoing food for baseball.
