Caps Look to Gain on Thrashers in Southeast
Dec. 15 vs. Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena
Time: 7:30 pm
TV: NewsChannel 8
Radio: WTNT 570 AM

Washington Capitals (13-10-7)
Atlanta Thrashers (18-9-5)

Washington heads south on Friday for a Southeast Division match with the Atlanta Thrashers. The Caps have yet to beat the Thrashers this season, and Friday would be a perfect time to reverse that trend. Washington trails front-running Atlanta by eight points in the standings and has two games in hand.

The Caps are 5-1-1, but are coming off a painful 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh at Verzion Center on Monday. In a game that was aired on national television, the Capitals roared out to a 4-0 early second period lead, only to watch it vanish in less than 20 minutes. Pittsburgh then took the two points by winning the shootout. The Caps have dropped four of the last five to their former Patrick Division rivals.

It was the first time in 15 years and just the third time in franchise history that the Caps had a four-goal lead in a game they failed to win. As difficult is that loss was to swallow, the Caps know they need to look ahead rather than behind.

?We put it behind us by the time we left the rink [on Monday], I hope,? says Caps coach Glen Hanlon. ?We [won] five of six, and then there was one game where we lost our focus. You start at 7:00 and you play to 9:30.?

The Caps did salvage a point in the loss to Pittsburgh, and they?ll move on without attaching any extraordinary significance to that ? or any other ? game.

?There are too many games to play to make one more [important] than the others,? declares Hanlon. ?If you put more stock in one than another ? I?ve chosen not to do that. We spoke to them after the game about what went wrong and we?re trying to get our act together for this game coming up.?

That would be Friday?s tilt with the Thrashers, the fifth meeting between the two Southeast Division occupants this season. Atlanta has won each of the first four; the Caps picked up single points in the first two by virtue of being tied at the end of regulation.

Much ado was made a few weeks back when the Capitals and Thrashers combined for 176 minutes worth of penalties in a game that turned feisty in the final minutes. Fines and suspensions were levied. Some even started uttering the ?R? word: rivalry.

?The game was played,? states Hanlon. ?There was a reaction on our part. We responded, they responded. For us, it?s put to bed. I just want to get in there and win a hockey game.?

That PIM figure from the Caps-Thrashers tilt was tame; it fell a minute short of the Caps? record for PIM in a game, which was 177 set on Dec. 21, 1980 in a 6-0 win over Philadelphia. That was just Washington?s PIM total in that 1980 game. The Caps and Flyers combined for a Washington franchise record 344 PIM in that long ago Patrick Division match-up.

The fans say Washington?s biggest rivals are still its old Patrick Division foes. Teams such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the Rangers routinely outdraw games featuring Washington?s ?new? division opponents from the Southeast at the Verizon Center.

To Hanlon and the Caps, Friday?s game is just another game on the schedule.

?For us, we?re trying to get to 94 points,? he says. ?That?s our goal. If it?s two points [Friday] night against Atlanta, great. Wherever they come, at home or on the road, we?ll just take our segments and get our three wins and move on. We?re striving obviously for more than three [wins], but that?s our minimalist goal that we realize we need.

?From the coach on out, we?re an emotional group. I don?t think it?s good to put any more emphasis on [individual] games. We?re fired up enough for most games [that we don?t need to] say that this is a bigger game than Anaheim.?

The Capitals? power play unit ranks 18th in the NHL with a 16.4% success rate. Washington is 16th in the league in penalty killing with a kill rate of 82.8%.

Atlanta toted a four-game losing skid ? its longest of the season ? with it when it came into Verizon Center for that aforementioned game on Nov. 22. The Caps jumped out to a 2-0 second period lead, but the Thrashers scored four unanswered tallies to take a 4-2 decision over Washington.

Including that night, the Thrashers are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games. But Atlanta is winless in its last three games (0-2-1), and this is the fourth time in the five meetings this season that the Thrashers will face the Capitals coming off a loss in their previous game or games.

Most recently, the Thrashers took a 2-1 home ice setback at the hands of the red-hot Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night. Kari Lehtonen was in goal for Atlanta that night; he has earned eight of the Thrashers? last nine decisions. Johan Hedberg started and won each of Atlanta?s two games against Washington in November.

Atlanta has just nine regulation losses this season, one fewer than Washington. The Thrashers have eight more victories than the Capitals, and their dominance in the season?s series to date has made the difference between the two clubs in the Southeast Division standings.

Atlanta?s power play ranks ninth in the NHL with a success rate of 18.2%. The Thrashers rank 24th on the league?s penalty killing ledger, having killed off 80.7% of the opposition?s power play chances.

Final at Phillips Arena in OT

Washington 3
Atlanta 2

ATLANTA (AP) -- Alex Ovechkin scored his third goal of the game 6 seconds into overtime to power the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday night.  Ovechkin stole an apparent victory from Atlanta by scoring the tying goal with only 30 seconds left in regulation. He took the puck from Niclas Havelid following the faceoff to open overtime and scored the unassisted goal.

The hat trick gave the Washington star 21 goals for the season.  Jean-Pierre Vigier gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead with less than 6 minutes left in regulation.  The Thrashers suffered their fourth straight loss and fell to 4-1 against Washington this season.  Brent Johnson, starting ahead of Olie Kolzig for the second straight game, made 28 saves for the Capitals.  Jon Sim scored Atlanta's first goal.

Caps Host Homestand Opener vs. Philly
Dec. 16 vs. Philadelphia Flyers at Verizon Center
Time: 7:00 pm
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Radio: WTEM 980 AM

Philadelphia Flyers (8-19-4)
Washington Capitals (14-10-7)

Two teams headed in the opposite direction will hook up on Saturday night at Verizon Center when the Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers for the first time this season. Washington is 6-1-1 in its last eight games while Philadelphia is 0-4-1 in its last five. Saturday?s contest opens a three-game homestand for the Capitals.

The Caps are coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Thrashers in Atlanta on Friday night. Alex Ovechkin notched the second hat trick of his career ? including the tying goal in the final minute of regulation and the game-winner just six seconds into overtime ? to enable the Caps to pick up a point on front-running Atlanta in the Southeast Division standings. Washington trails Atlanta by seven points, and the Caps have two games in hand on the Thashers.

Friday night?s game-winner was the quickest overtime tally in Caps franchise history, breaking the standard set by Kelly Miller on Jan. 16, 1999 when he scored just nine seconds into overtime in a game at Carolina.

Ovechkin?s first career hat trick also came on a Friday night on the road, and accounted for all the offense in a 3-2 Washington win. That game was in Anaheim on Jan. 13. He completed the hat trick with an overtime goal that night, too.

The Caps? 21-year-old sophomore sensation launched a dozen shots at the Atlanta net on Friday, lighting the lamp with three of them to raise his season?s total to 21, third in the league and just one behind co-leaders Marian Hossa and Brendan Shanahan. Ovechkin is tied for fifth in the NHL with nine power play goals.

Ovechkin has now recorded double-digit shot totals in 10 of his 112 (8.9%) career NHL games. He ranks fourth among all active players in double-digit shot games. The Rangers? Jaromir Jagr leads with 14 such games in 1,141 (1.2%) career contests. Chicago?s Peter Bondra has 13 double-digit shot games in his 1,046 (1.2%) NHL games, and Nashville?s Paul Kariya has a dozen double-digit shot games in his 770 (1.6%) games in the league.

Ovechkin leads the NHL with 171 shots on goal this season. He is on a pace to reach 452 shots in 2006-07. He had 425 as a rookie in 2005-06, the fourth highest single-season total in NHL history. The all-time record is 550, set by Boston?s Phil Esposito in 1970-71.

Friday?s win over Atlanta raised Washington?s road record to 7-4-4. The Capitals did not collect their seventh road win of 2005-06 until Feb. 28, the first game after the Olympic break. That victory in Toronto lifted the Caps road record to 7-18-1. They finished last season with a 13-23-5 road record.

Dating back to last season, the Caps are now 10-5-4 in their last 19 road tilts.

In Washington?s last seven games, it has outscored the opposition by a combined 12-3 in the first period but has been outscored by opponents 12-8 in the second period.

?There are going to be some lulls in your game,? concedes Caps coach Glen Hanlon. ?It?s just managing your mistakes, getting through those and trying to limit them to shorter periods of time. Even the most disciplined of hockey teams are going to get into some areas of games where they?re turning pucks over when they shouldn?t.

?The second periods for us are such a contrast, because our first periods have been so good. We are aware, and we?re really trying to focus on the first five minutes of that second period and getting into the flow again right away.?

The Caps went into Friday?s game with the league?s 17th ranked power play, a unit that has clicked on 16.4% of its chances. Washington was 2-for-5 with the extra man in Friday?s win over the Thrashers. The Caps have scored at least one power play goal in five straight games and 13 of the last 15.

Washington is 16th on the NHL?s penalty killing ledger with a kill rate of 82.8%. The Caps have killed off 36 of 41 opposing power plays in the last eight games, a rate of 87.8%.

The Flyers are coming off an 8-4 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Philadelphia has allowed eight or more goals in a game three times this season. Over the previous 11 seasons, the Flyers allowed eight or more goals in a game only twice.

The loss to Pittsburgh was Philly?s fifth in succession (0-4-1), marking the team?s third five-game losing streak this season. The Flyers have lost all five of their meetings to the Pens this season, and have been outscored 28-11 in the process.

Philadelphia appeared to be awakening from its season-long slumber when it went 5-3-1 over the final nine games of November. But the Flyers? current five-game skid started immediately thereafter.

Injuries have hampered the Flyers more than any team in the league this season. Eight players missed Wednesday?s game because of various injuries, and the Flyers have used a league-high 35 different players already this season. Philadelphia?s man-games lost because of injury total already exceeds 100 and is growing at a rapid rate.

Saturday marks the first time the Flyers come into the District with a losing record since Oct. 12, 1999 when they sported an 0-2-1 mark. The last time a Philadelphia team visited Washington after Nov. 1 of a given season with a losing record was on Mar. 4, 1994 when the Flyers came into USAir Arena with a 29-31-10 record.

The Flyers are 27th in the NHL with a 14.3% power play success rate. Philadelphia is 10th in the league with a penalty killing success rate of 84.9%. Philly has killed 19 of 25 (76%) opposition power plays in its last four games.

Forsberg has a concussion, and his team has fallen apart.  How sad.  Nothing against Forsberg (though I'm still pissed about that $#%&@#$%$ goal he scored on Patrick Roy in the Gold medal game at Lillehammer in '92), but I HATE the Flyers.

Forsberg returns from ankle injury, then leaves loss with concussion

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Alexander Semin had two goals and an assist, Alex Ovechkin added a goal and two assists, and the Washington Capitals spoiled the abbreviated return of Philadelphia captain Peter Forsberg by handing the Flyers their sixth straight loss, 4-1 Saturday night.

The six-game skid matches the Flyers' franchise record. It's the second time this season they've dropped six in a row; each streak includes an overtime defeat.

Forsberg's return from a four-game absence provided the Flyers with a momentary lift. After finally finding a skate to accommodate his surgically repaired right ankle, the veteran center received an assist on a goal by Mike Knuble that put Philadelphia up 1-0 at 3:31 of the first period.

But the lead vanished by the end of the period, and so did Forsberg. He missed the final 40 minutes with a concussion.

Semin assisted on Dainius Zubrus' first-period goal, then scored twice in the second period to put Washington ahead 3-1.

Ovechkin, who had a hat trick one night earlier in Atlanta, scored with 16:44 left to make it 4-1. He has 22 goals and 21 assists in 32 games.

Washington has won seven of nine, including two victories over Philadelphia. Olie Kolzig had 21 saves for the Capitals, who are 3-0 against the Flyers this season.

Forsberg wasn't the only player to give the Flyers a temporary boost. Defenseman Alexei Zhitnik, acquired earlier Saturday in a trade with the New York Islanders, was inserted in the starting lineup logged a team-high 7 minutes, 44 seconds of ice time in the opening period.

Although he didn't score, Zhitnik played solid defense and was used on both special teams.

A breakaway goal by Semin gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 5:52 of the second period. Semin took a lead pass from Brian Pothier, skated down the right side, deked Flyers goalie Antero Nittymaki and scored on a wraparound.

Semin made it 3-1 with his 14th goal of the season, on a perfect centering pass from Ovechkin one second after Zhitnik left the penalty box.

Knuble's goal stood up until late in the first period, when Zubrus flipped the puck past a prone Nittymaki to end a scramble in front of the net. Semin and Ovechkin received assists on the play.
