Hey guys, NFA Brian posted this in the Minor League thread:

Quote
Nationals acquired OF Norris Hopper and 1B/DH Daryle Ward from White Sox for cash; both are reportedly headed to Syracuse (Ward already listed as such, Hopper not yet)

Too bad Daryle appears to not have anything left in the tank.

Volstad was lucky.  He left that one way up again.

And those young pitchers can start next season in Syracuse.  You shouldn't depend on them from day 1. They should be called up if the good, solid veterans we sign fall through.

Why are we always expected to rush our prospects up.  Other, mature, FO let their young players spend time, sometime lots of time, in the minors and don't expect them to perform in the majors so quickly.

Hell, I might consider starting Zimmermann in Syracuse and certainly Strasburg.

Are you stupid? Why would a rebuilding team send a starter like Zimmermann who is one the 30 best pitchers in the NL to Syracuse? We would be retarded if we did that especially for some veteran retread in the Daniel Cabrera or Tim Redding variety.

Ok, that was cool and all, but ummm, I don't want him thinking he's a power hitter all of a sudden.

Rob Dibble is also stupid. What veteran pitcher could we get for 15-20 million that is decent? Seriously, Dibble has no understanding about how the game works.

I'm with Dibble.

Don't sign Straus cause his arm is going to fall off.

Give it to one or two pitchers that will get the job done next year.

He does it all the time.  That ball could've been caught.  It's a shame Riggs/Eck aren't on his ass for doing so.  He should be taking a page from Guzman/Morgan.  Instead he thinks he's so good of a hitter he can do whatever he wants.  That's why I'm not a huge fan of alGO anymore.  He's at his best when he's hitting ground balls up the middle or line drives that fall in for base hits.

I'll take the 2-rbi double, but it's not his game.

Did he say not to sign Strasburg, or that he thinks we need to sign FA in addition? The former I don't agree with, but the latter I do.

He does, but he does not understand the value of Strasburg. 20 Million is a huge bargain for Strasburg. A 6 year 20 million deal for a potential ace is a steal. Aces don't go on the Free agent market often and when they do, they make a lot more than Strasburg will. Plus, Strasburg is young so we are going to have him for his whole prime.

Marlins 2003 1st round pick, Jeff Allison, finally made it to AA last night.  He was sent back down to A immediately following the game.

He's missed more than 2 years since Beinfest never met with him or investigated the tales about him.  He's missed time due to nearly dying from a heroin overdose, drug charges resulting in jail time, etc.

Smart front offices don't rush their young players.  Nothing is lost by him spending a season or part of another season in Syracuse.

Look at all of the contending teams who would trade this or that minor leaguer.  They actually have good players in their minor league systems.  It's ok to have good players in the minors.  It also means you have to have good players on your major league roster, to keep those players down.

He said he would rather spend that money on a veteran in the free agent market if Strasburg is asking for 15-20 million

Potential.

The guy could blow his arm out tomorrow and be garbage.

Rob would rathe give the money to a player who has a track record in the pro's. I don't disagree.

Sign Strasburg ... test his arm in camp and see where he is and whether he's ready for the bigs ... but also go out and get a marquee starting pitcher.

Lannan and Zimmermann are pretty much like locks.  If Balester keeps throwing the way he is, he'll be a solid back-end option.  And there's the likes of Detwiler, Martis, Stammen, etc.
