I sure hope this is an extremely rough draft, because so far I hate it.

This is what comes up if I click the start menu button or hit the windows key:

This is what the desktop looks like, but it tries really hard to make you go back to metro mode (clicked links launch in IE in metro mode):

I sure hope so.  Metro fights with you to be the default for everything at every step.  In this build at least, the Vista/7 start menu does not exist.  I can't see them shipping the final version like this, home desktop/laptop and business users don't' need all this tablet crap.

Metro?

the over-arching name for the tablet-ized interface.

Why do I see Windows XP sticking around for another 20 years?  I'm going to stick with the command line from here on out...

Windows 7 is a fine operating system.  The only people I see using XP anymore are the ones stuck on software that was so poorly designed that it only works on XP.

I'm sure you're right that XP will have it's niches for another decade though :?

Or companies with clueless and overwhelmed IT departments.  I've never used 7 but I'll take you word on it that it's cool.

The dev preview of Windows 8 is beyond terrible.  I couldn't even figure out how the hell to shutdown from anywhere, had to do it manually with the shutdown command.

But, at least the BSOD is nicer.

"HAL INITIALIZATION FAILED"

Uh, is this seriously the BSOD you encountered or a joke?  If it's not a joke it's hiiiiiiiiiiilarious.

One thing I particularly don't like about Windows 8 is you can't close Metro apps.  The operating system "handles" it.  I don't like programs that I'm finished using, lurking in the background.

Technically, you can close programs from Task Manager and that's just an ugly way to exit a program.

I suspect all of that stuff will be "uninstallable" in the final version, ala Windows Media Center.

Are they trying to give Linux/Mac marketshare? The start menu looks like it's full of cellphone bloatware

What they have to do between now and release is figure out how to deprecate/dole out the Metro UI to different parts of their user base because it's completely non-conducive to getting work done and people will still need their computers to get work done, shockingly.

Been using 8 for about a week now...  it's actually quite nice once you disable the tablet interface (there are a couple of different methods out there).

Honestly, it's already good enough to be a casual daily driver.  I have yet to run into any program compatibility issues - unsurprising since "8" is really 6.2 (7 is 6.1, Vista was 6.0).

Defrag util now supports SSDs and runs TRIM instead of defragging:

File copy dialog has received some tweaks:

Collision handling is vastly improved, imo:

Let me just say, now that I've use Windows 7 for a bit I'm really starting to like it.  I hate all of the crape Dell ships with their machines, but Win7 looks pretty cool for right now.
