I still say that with a good lineup which would allow him to hit in the 8-hole, Danny Espinosa can still prove valuable to us at the Major League level. Our biggest problem is that this lineup relies on Danny to produce higher up in the order.

Give Lombo a month at 2B. We know that Lombo can field. Can he hit? He has so far (20 games at .300). So far, espinosa is at .190 or less...with Bernadina (or whoever) in LF, that's too much dead weight.

He needs to be sent down yesterday. Earlier in the season he was grinding out at bats and now he is just giving up it seems with the bat.

it's bad when his biggest fans and members of SSS are like this guy needs to go.

again i think he has a future with this club, but needs some time in AAA to get his swing back.

Heyward had a great rookie year, struggled mightily in his second year, and seems to be back on track this year. I totally understand where people are coming from with Espinosa, and maybe it would benefit him to see some AAA pitching, but I'm willing to give him some benefit of the doubt after how well he did last year, especially a fifth of the way through the season.

I don't get it. Lombo was good enough to take over the 2nd spot from espy when he was filling in for Zim, but not start over him at 2nd.....doesnt make sense to me. Lombo was hitting and we need hitting in the worst way. I'm so tired of 10+Ks per night.

The OBP is the key there though. 284OBP is just not very good. Nearly at Mendoza line for OBP with 204? Uhhhhhhh. 204 OBP is "take a gun into the clubhouse and shoot yourself in the head" levels. Because really, a 204 OBP in 100 ABs is some of the worst batting I've ever seen. That's beyond merely being shockingly bad, it's get the freak off my team now bad.

Through about 4/17, espinosa's K% was below 25%. His walks rate was pretty good, too. Less than 2:1 K:BB. I'll look up thread and link the post where I pulled that {Edit - look at replies #2 and #7 on page 1 of this thread}. The problem was, his power completely disappeared, his contact was not dropping in, and his average stunk.

After that, he started hacking more, going back to his batting style from last year. From that time on, when he did make contact, it started dropping in more, so his BABIP is now back to last year (a few of us guessed this would happen when he stopped trying to be a #2 hitter and stopped trying to take pitches to make up for the leadoff guy's approach). The problem is, the K% shot up, so now the season number is 31.7%, he is walking less, and he is not making enough contact to have a respectable average or OBP. Additionally, the power looks like the 2d half of last year, when he was having trouble.

He was rushed a bit, with only 2 full seasons in the minors, and probably could have used another year in the minors to figure out how to make more regular contact without costing power. It is strange to say this, but the longer he remains in the majors, it seems the hole he's digging gets deeper, and he is unlearning things.

106 ABs and he is striking out over 30% of the time. Loops in his swing from both sides of the plate. Power is lost. Eyes must be checked and he needs to figure out his swing in Syracuse. Hate to pull the plug this early but he is BELOW 0 in WAR right now. Make the change and either find someone who can fill in from Cuse or outside the organization as the utility guy. When does DeRosa get back?

I understand what DJ's trying to do with Espi ... playing him ... trying to build him up. As some point, he has to recognize that it ain't working. Give the kid some rest. He needs it. The team needs it. The fans need it. Maybe he needs some at bats in AA.

Agreed, it hasn't been working, nor as it shown any signs. Yeah, he had the double, great, but that's it. IDK what needs to be done, but this is his sophomore year, correct? Don't all ball players experience a big drop in #'s for some reason? Hope that's the case for him.

espinosa hits now in the same way he hit his first September, and last year. He swings at pitches breaking down, pitches in the dirt, he swings and misses. It has been painful to watch. I am not sure he has learned to hit major league pitching. Maybe Lombo will fail, if given a chance, but espinosa is reliably missing.
