Maine (3-0, 1.71 ERA) has gone at least seven innings in three of his four starts after hitting that mark just twice in 16 games last season. He is coming off his longest start of the year Monday when he held Colorado to one run and seven hits over 7 2-3 innings while striking out five in a 6-1 win.

"I've been working hard on conditioning, things like that, and it's paid off,'' said Maine, who is 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA in four career starts versus the Nationals. "My goal coming into the season was going out there and pitching at least six innings each time out there. I had a tough time with that last year.''

Jason Bergmann (0-1, 3.27 ERA) is still searching for his first win as a starter with the Nationals. The right-hander has appeared in 48 games in his career, but is 0-2 with a 5.27 ERA in 11 starts.

He held Philadelphia to one earned run and three hits over six innings with five strikeouts, but didn't factor in the 6-3 defeat on Tuesday.

"Terrific outing," Natonals rookie manager Manny Acta told the team's official Web site. "He did a great job for us. We thought in that (sixth) inning, he was starting to lose it. We tried to take him out on a positive note."

Maine is going to punish us just like Glavine did last night, maybe even worse.  Hopefully Bergmann will be able to keep the game close..

Jerome Williams is pitching 2 days in a row according to the first post?  The picture looks more like Jay Bergmann...  Jesus Flores is starting again.  I have John Maine on both Forum fantasy teams, both picked up off waivers.  He came up through the Orioles organization and had horrible stats there (a requirement to be an Oriole now.)  He's been impressive with the Mets.

Looks like we are going to make Maine look like a Cy Young winner today.. predictable

edit: This team doesn't make sense.. We look at pitches right down the middle and swing at pitches in the dirt.

Church gets Steal #2 of the year, to improve his Extrapolation number.  Still needs more HRs.

Maine actually could be the 2007 Cy Young winner, if the Mats keep beating other teams.

Church with a great AB and a great steal...  Carpenter makes an interesting point about Church's OBP...  bat him leadoff?

Flores may not bat any better than Schneider, but he sure does seem to pick up where Schneider's arm left off.

Anyone know what our runs per game average is?  It can't possibly be any higher than 2 or 3 tops.

Church with a great AB and a great steal...  Carpenter makes an interesting point about Church's OBP...  bat him leadoff?

I think that would be a bigger mistake than having Soriano bat leadoff last year.  Church isn't that fast, but he should get 10-15 steals per year (and he has shin splints right now.)  But he hits home runs and should have a LOT more RBIs if he were batting behind players who have both speed and a high OBP.  I'd bat Church 2nd or 3rd, so he gets to the plate in the 1st inning.

I'm not saying it's what I'd do either, but it's an interesting idea...  Church never gets a pitch to hit right now because he's a hot hitter who bats before the junk bottom of the lineup, and they especially aren't gonna pitch to him if anyone's on base, so why not put him at leadoff.  After all we all remember what batting leadoff did for Soriano's numbers.  You don't seriously think Soriano would've gotten all those homers if he were batting 6th do you?
