Before I read your comment, I thought the picture was a shot of the lot in Reston that flooded a while back.

The Euro models are showing a blizzard of historic proportions hitting New England Friday-Saturday, just rain for us in D.C. though.  12-30" snow for much of Long Island, CT, RI, MA.

Give me a G, give me an F, give an S . . . USA, USA, USA.

Why don't you just call me and find out when I'm going to boston in the winter?  That is a more accurate predictor than any of this modeling stuff.  Due to fly out Friday AM from DCA to BOS.  I'm kind of hoping the flight gets cancelled if it is going to be rough.

Euro > GFS for long-range forecasting.  Followed Sandy from the SEMO desk and the Euro model was pretty well spot-on from about 6 days prior to landfall.  Once again, Europe is better than the U.S.

Yes, it was great for Sandy, but apparently it has been over-predicting snow this winter, at least in New England.

The model predicting the snowstorm is quite accurate and actually did the best job with predicting hurricane Sandy. However, that particular model has been over forecasting storms this winter and therefore I am not willing to commit to its forecast just yet. As of late morning our other model, the GFS or Global Forecasting System, is now also predicting a steady snow or snow to rain situation Friday. It's still way too early to say much more than we will have a snowy day in many areas Friday. This could be a large storm, but it could also turn out to produce just a few inches so stay tuned.

Imref - you'll really enjoy this link to a description of the Blizzard of '78.  Some great photos.
http://www.boston.com/news/weather/weather_wisdom/2013/02/the_meteorology_behind_the_bli.html

The snow totals may have been exceeded, but in terms of wind intensity, tides, snow, and quirky meteorology, this still is a classic.  with 24" in New Haven, Yale called off classes for the first time in 275+ years.  It was so unheard of, my professor, Edmund Morgan, came in and had class anyway (hurt my grade, but it also meant Morgan gave me the final oral exam; he only did that for students in danger of failing or potentially getting an A).  My home suburb of Boston got 30".  The surface pressure was 984  millibars.  Jet streams converged, and a hurricane-like circulation, with an eye, set up.  The best restaurant in Boston at the time, Pier 4, had a riverboat tied up next to it for functions and dining. It sunk in its berth.  That said, they still played the Beanpot.

The link below is to Globe photos then and now.  One section of Revere (the beach town near Logan Airport to the north), Beachmont, had a 16' above-normal high tide, leading to 2500 people evacuating.

3000 cars abandoned on the Boston beltway, route 128, and $500MM damage (in 1978) in Massachusetts alone.

Oh, and I shoveled the one bigger snow fall in February 2003.

I was but a wee-laddie (7 y.o.) for the Blizzard of '78 but I remember it well.  Snow on the Cape and wind was unreal.  I remember the 7-foot-high fence that separated our yard from our neighbor's yard had snow drifts that went over the top of it.

That was a huge snowstorm here too.  Ruined my throwing shoulder throwing hundreds and hundreds of snowballs on the South Chapel Lawn and along Route 1 in C.P.

What was your VORP in subsequent snowball fights?  Did you develop the knuckleball to compensate?

According to wxrisk.com, this is setting up to be the biggest snowfall in new england.....ever recorded.  NAM and Euro models show huge amounts of snow, GFS is still trending warmer with more rain.

Quote
The 12z NAM drops over 5 inches of liquid across Eastern Massachusetts and the south west portions of Maine and the southeast coast and New Hampshire. The model shows over 48" of snow for Boston and Worcester Mass up into Manchester New Hampshire and along the Portland main coastal metro areas.... Inland the snow mounts are between 24 and 36 inches. The model shuts this snow off as it reaches New York City with Bridgeport CT getting 6 inches of snow and New York City seeing a zero

Foot to two feet still seems like the consensus, with 2+ feet in some spots.

There's nothing left now, but then....

Here are the little entitled frat rats fleeing in terror under the barrage from the anarchic dorm students:

And if we ran short of supplies, we'd stop here:

And once we had the munchies...

Accuweather's Henry Margusity posted that he was watching a storm around 2/14 on his facebook page, but right now everyone is focusing on the one hitting NE tomorrow.
