Orr gets five games, Brashear one for roles in fights

NEW YORK -- The NHL suspended Rangers forward Colton Orr for five games and Washington enforcer Donald Brashear for one on Sunday following New York's fight-filled victory over the Capitals.

Orr received his ban for a cross-checking blow to the head of Washington forward Alex Ovechkin with 4:20 left in the Rangers' 4-1 victory on Saturday night.

"The Rangers player's actions with his stick were reckless and dangerous," NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell said in a statement. "Although no injury resulted, the action is unacceptable."

Orr, who has no points and 60 penalty minutes in 25 games this season, will lose $13,235.29 in salary. He will be eligible to return for New York's home game against Boston on Jan. 13.

Brashear was given a match penalty for punching Rangers defenseman Aaron Ward at 7:39 of the final period as the Capitals forward skated off right after he fought Brendan Shanahan.

It is the second suspension given this season to Brashear, who missed three earlier games after a Nov. 22 fight with Atlanta's Vitaly Vishnevski.

Brashear, who has three assists and 97 penalty minutes in 35 games this season, will sit out Washington's home game against Phoenix on Monday and lose $12,195.12.

Suspended, maybe, but not even close to what Brash will get. Why does Brash get a penalty when he comes in after Gordon got hit from behind into the boards and the Rangers guy gets the first 2 punches in? Because of his name. Orr doesn't have the reputation Brash has and they'll give Brash way more for the fact that he's him. Orr gets maybe 5 games and a fine. Maybe 5. Probably 3.

Orr 5, Brashear 1. I think 5 a piece would've been suitable. So your Colin Campbell love theory was wrong  :P

And what's up with this

A NYR fan on another forum brought up a great point... Why was Shane Morrison not handed a 1 game suspension and the Capital's coach fined $10,000?

He took an instigator with 4:20 left to play, which falls within the last 5 minutes of the game:

Washington  instigator - 2 min  15:40, S. Morrisonn
Washington game misconduct - 10 min 15:40, S. Morrisonn
Washington unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min 15:40

I took it from another forum so Iquoted it. He's got something there.

Shamo didn't do anything. He was sticking up for Ovy. No way Shaone should get a fine or suspension.

Good to see Campbell did the right thing. Too bad there won't be a Brash - Laraque fight tommorow.

(NEW for 2005-06) A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at any time in overtime, shall be assessed an instigator minor penalty, a major for fighting, a ten minute misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension. The length of suspension will double for each subsequent offense. In addition, the player's coach shall be fined $10,000 -- a fine that will double for each subsequent incident.

thats the rule, so according to the NHL rulebook, and the penalty handed out to him he should've been. I really don't care that he didn't....but the fact that Orr sits five for defending Jagr, and Shane doesn't get anything for defending Ovechkin is bull.

It was a bullcrap instigator. Orr was ready to drop with anyone who came close to him. Shaone doesn't deserve a suspension.
