The Nationals accomodated Chien Ming-Wang's strange warmup routine, they can handle Bauer.

And I'd hope they learned from their experience with Detwiler not to mess with mechanics/routines too much for these pitchers. Rather accept and work with them the way they are.

David DeJesus could be had relatively cheaply.  He's somewhat similar to Angel Pagan - can play good defense at a corner outfield spot.  Not much power but gets on base and has decent speed.  He's a lefty bat.  The Cubs are rebuilding and would likely take what they can get for him in the way of prospects.  Put DeJesus at leadoff or bat him second with Werth leading off again.  Only signed for one more year.  But he's 33 years old next year and might not be a great bet not to drop off.

I wouldn't trade that much for Bauer.  Being a very young pitcher with an unorthodox delivery, he's too much of an injury risk to pay the cost they'd demand.

You should read that. His delivery is the result of a lot of work and there's as much science behind it as any other delivery in baseball.

that rotation would be sick though:

Strasburg / Gonzalez / Zimmermann / Detwiler / Bauer

Adam Kilgore ‏@AdamKilgoreWP

In searching for a starter to replace Jackson, Rizzo said the Nats are "open-minded," not necessarily looking for a veteran type.

Bauer would definitely cost Rendon. Or Desmond/Espinosa. Maybe both.

I read it and watched the video.  I'm not informed enough to really understand what he was talking about but his motion is still unorthodox and he's still very young - that to me is enough to scare me off from trading a top prospect or two for him.

The Michael Pineda trade is similar to the Bauer situation. Do we have a Montero equivalent to send out?

Not sure if serious - Pineda hasn't exactly been a resounding success for the Yanks.

I don't see any similarities. Safeco is a graveyard for right handed power hitters, yet plays much better for left handers. What Montero offered Seattle ( in theory) was a right handed bat with good opposite field power. Chase on the other hand is a mecca for hitters. Arizona has been able to develop/obtain power bats much easier than Seattle.

Similar in that both Bauer and Pineda are talented and very young pitchers who are being shopped/dealt very early in their careers.

the main difference here is that pineda was a more prototypical power pitcher with a workhorse frame.  He also had a very good year in the majors and proved that he could play at the MLB level.  Bauer has not proven anything yet, in fact, in his time in the majors he proved to be a guy with virtually no control.

When that trade happened, I thought it was a slam dunk for the Yankees.  If anything, the results of that trade show the perils of trading a really good position player or prospect for even an MLB-proven young pitcher.  Pitchers are just so much more likely to get hurt than position players.

That's usually the way it works. You deal from your depth to address your needs. The Mariners didn't have a solid DH prospect and, frankly, need hitting. It's one of the reasons they dealt Ichiro. Their lineup is filled with number 2 hitters. With another year under his belt, Montero is giong to be that slugger in the middle of the lineup they need. And with the depth the Mariners had at pitcher, they could spare Pineda.

What I want to know is if they knew he had a bum shoulder before trading him to the Yankees.

Okay but you should also realize that the Mariners and the Diamonbacks have little in common so trade demands aren't going to be similar.

They aren't?

Young team with a plethora of arms and a need for a good hitting prospect. In this case, they need someone on the left side of the infield instead of a DH/C/1B.

It was viewed as a good trade for the Yankees. Many thought Pineda should have been able to yield a higher return.

If they didn't know, they probably guessed that it was going to happen sooner rather than later. Hell, I marked Pineda as a a massive injury risk the first time I saw him. I said something along those lines when the deal happened too. I saw the spring training game it was first discovered in too. That was weird to see a guy I had picked to get hurt get hurt so early in his career.
