one thing that could be very appealing to rizzo is that greinke would not cost a draft pick because he was a mid season aquisition by the angels.

I'm not quoting anyone for sheer lack of laziness on my part.  Yes I am aware that Pena didn't sign here and that he felt the Cubs were closer than the Nats, hence we ended up with LaRoche who ended up being the better pick even with one half year of junk and the other half not even playing.

At least with guys like that though it filled a need.  There is no need with a CF.  Harper is probably in the same league defensively as Upton and has WAY more tools than Bourn.  In the system and likely one year away from the bigs is a lead off left handed hitting machine with average to above average tools.  All FIVE tools.  Only things I can see at this point are one year guys to place in LF or the exact same lineup as last year.  Choo would be most appealing I think.

I like this method,  is a $13 million wager for a Draft picks on marginal guys,  and has no bearing on better players or,  importantly,  worse players and the middle relievers who used to get screwed.  The only complaint might be from smaller market teams less able to take the risk of marginal players accepting qualifying offers

Dont want Swisher. What exactly is he going to add to this team?

If we were to play for Swisher, then I think it is likely that we have a deal involving one of Rendon or Goodwin in the works.  I don't see him settling quickly for anything less than 4 years, which would mean he'd block one of Rendon or Goodwin (assuming Rendon is a corner infielder opposite Zimmerman).  One of those players could be used to trade for a SP or a big OF bat like Justin Upton. If it were the D-backs, it'd probably be Rendon given their expressed interest in SS or 3B.

GMU - 4/$56MM might work well.

Swisher’s been a +4 win player for each of the last three years, mixing in consistent offensive performance with solid defense and durability. He’s not sexy, but he’s rock solid across the board, with no obvious flaws or red flags to be found. He’s the safest bet in the entire class, and a four year deal would only take him through age 35. If a team can actually get Swisher for 4/56, they should jump on it before the rest of the league realizes that they’re skipping out on a bargain.

Yes. Work, not work well.  1st choice for me still is ALR on 2 years plus an option.  Failing that, and if the big fish is something other than ALR (Dback Upton and Ray Shields?) then I could see going for a longer term LF 1b fix.

I don't think the Nats sign LaRoche or any free agent position player. I can see them making a play for Greinke and maybe picking up a February orphan but nothing else.

Winning bid for Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was $25.7 million. Team unknown so far. He is a Boras client.

And it's been announced that he winner is not the cubs or rangers.  I am personally expecting it to be the red sox or blue jays

Wasn't the Nats. LAC

25 Mil is a sh!tload of money that only gives you an exclusive 30 day negotiation period on a player who may or may not be any good.  International FA are always huge gambles and I can understand why many GMs and owners don't want to invest in that.  If I were them, I'd spend 25 Million on an international program like the international systems many teams have (nats included).

O's didn't bid. If it's the Dodgers, wtf? This would be spending money just to spend money.

Actually ... they have a pretty bleak looking farm system and they really need pitching. This, basically, enables them to buy one of the best prospects in baseball.
