Olney says teams could exploit a flaw in the cba to sign picks without losing first round compensation. For instance, Cleveland, which already lost its second round pick for swisher, could sign laroche and then trade him.  The nats would get a third round pick from Cleveland as compensation and then Cleveland could trade him for something between a first and third in value.

It's not a popular opinion but I am thankful we didn't get Greinke. The guy is a headcase and a piece of crap. He spurned the Nats before, but now that they are making waves, oh, maybe. Whatever. Whatever is going on in that Nats locker room seems to be working and I really don't think Greinke would have contributed positively.

That's a massive oversimplification of what occurred.

Greinke simply didn't want to be traded to a team that just gutted it's roster to acquire him... going from one losing situation to another losing situation wasn't going to help him, or the Nats.

He did the team a favor.

I tend to believe that the simplest answer is the more likely. We aren't dealing with a bunch of Socrates and R.A. Dickeys here. We are dealing with jocks. Meat.

He was full of crap then and I think he is full of crap now. He wouldn't have been a fit then or now so I don't know why some fans are choking like we missed some prime opportunity. (Not saying here necessarily, but in other parts of this great Interweb.)

Well, I choose to believe what he said at the time.

He is known to be the absolute opposite of "meat".  Zack is known as a true student of the game and very cerebral.  I'm one to think that if the Nats actually offered him a deal, he probably would have wanted to go to DC over LA or Texas.

Derek Lowe is drawing interest from five teams, all of which want to use him as a long reliever and possible spot starter.

However, Lowe wants an opportunity to start.

"I've heard the same thing from everyone,” said Lowe. "I want to be a starter and feel I have a lot left in being a regular starter in a rotation and making my 30-plus starts. I can still do that. It's frustrating to see other starters who have come off injuries get a shot, and I've never been hurt and can still help a team. I'm sure things will get going for me in January. I want to pitch. I'm nowhere near ready to retire."

Soon as I read this little story first team to pop into my mind were our Nats :?

If Derek Lowe will take 30 starts in the regular rotation in Syracuse, then I'm all for it.

Greinke is just a weird guy.  Who knows what he would have done if we equaled the Dodgers' offer.

I thought the same thing.  Would like him better than Duke as long man / swing starter.  Would be nice starter depth.  Doesn't look like that's what he's looking for though.

So basically, #Nats only other LH reliever option is to sign J.P. Howell. Otherwise, they enter '13 with Zach Duke and Bill Bray.

I am not happy with Bray and Duke.  Sorry, but that's not good enough for world series contender.  Especially in a division with Utley, Howard, McCann, Freeman, and Heyward.  Not a season to be trying for lightening in a bottle!

For those panicked about the Nats' lack of LHRs: Lefties have hit .214 against Mattheus in his career, and .186 against Clippard.

Get JP Howell on the phone right now!

I don't love him and he's probably a downgrade from Burnett but I wouldn't mind if we brought him in. As long as we don't spend any more than a few million on a reliever I'm content.
