Can't tell. Lombo seems to have a weak arm for an OF or 3B, but he seems about normal for a 2B or SS. When comparing, need to remember that Desmond and Espinosa have unusually strong arms.

Lombo's arm for sure is not SS or 3B quality. Frankly, I think 2B is the only place on the field where his arm is not a major liability.

And, yes, Desi and Espy have two of the strongest arms I've ever seen together in a middle IF.

Could have had Liriano for two years for what we paid Haren for one

I would look at it the other way - Pirates could have had Dan Haren and instead got stuck with Liriano.

This was interesting - http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/21/mike-adams-turned-down-more-money-possibly-from-nationals-to-sign-with-phillies/

I don't see why we'd give Mike Adams $6 mil a year for 3 years.  Especially when we didn't bring Burnett back for much less than that and another lefty would bring more value to the Nats' pen than another righty.  And I don't know why Mike Adams would turn down more money from someone else to pitch for the Phillies.

edit - for reference, here is Liriano's page at baseball-reference - http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml

He was great in 2006.  Has alternated between terrible and a little above average (Edwin Jackson-range) since then.  With more terrible years than above average years.

because he'd rather be on a worse club and pitch half his games in an extreme hitters park.  duh.

Why would we want Liriano?  He hasn't been the same pitcher he was.  5 ERA, 1.5 WHIP.  No thanks.

For further reference on Liriano, here is Jonathan Sanchez's BR page - http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sanchjo01.shtml

There is no way in the world anyone gives him close to 2 years and $14 mil.  Same type of high K, high BB lefty who can't be counted on to pitch a full season.

He wouldn't be coming here as a set up guy or a closer.  He wouldn't be used as often as Clippard or Storen and I think that means something to him.  He will set up for Papelbon in Philadelphia.

Houston just signed Carlos Lee and the might bring back Berkman.  I don't know what we could offer them.

What about Brett Meyers? He can close, he can set up, he can start. Would be useful for pitching injuries

Jayson Werth needs to bring "Howlin' For You" back. Damn that was such an awesome walk up song.... especially for Werth.

Wright was good last year but he was in the minors in 2011 and was terrible prior to 2011.  He's also arbitration eligible now.  I think Houston should trade him to the highest bidder but whoever gets him might end up disappointed if they trade a lot for him.

Seattle is going after Raul Ibanez.  The market for LaRoche and Morse continues to shrink.

If LaRoche comes back, I think the Yankees might be one of the better fits out there for Morse (for most hitters, really, but especially for Morse).  The Yanks have 3 lefty hitting outfielders already and their best hitter, Cano, is also a lefty.  Morse would fit well with his right handed power.  The short porch in right field would also help him put up big numbers.

If LaRoche does come back (at this point the Nats are probably his best ticket to a WS ring), then the market for Morse is small.  I'm not sure if the M's would still want him, but he can play LF so there may still be some interest there.  Yankees, O's, Phillies and maybe Rays are the spots I could see.

Yanks would have to offer something from the MLB squad since their minor system is quite bereft.  O's, well, I just don't see a fit unless the Nats really want to take a flier on one of the washouts like Matusz.  Phillies, just eff no.

I want it to be the M's because I really want Carter Capps on the Nats.  The Rays would also fit well but they notoriously don't trade big pieces to get MLB guys.  Almost every trade they make, the Rays become the winner of, and yes that is a mindfact.

I'd take Troy Patton and Jonathan Schoop for Morse. That'd be a pretty fair trade.

With the acrimony between the Lerners and Angelos, I doubt we trade with the O's.

The Barves would be a good fit for Morse too but I don't see that happening either.  Texas might want him - they lost Napoli's right handed bat.

Patton would fill the void of a lefty reliever, and would be a good move but I don't see the O's dealing him.  Schoop would only be depth for the Nats at a position where they have some depth in the minors.

"Yanks would have to offer something from the MLB squad since their minor system is quite bereft. "

Just thinking about the Yankees (since I live about two miles from Yankee Stadium): the MLB squad is about as thin as the minors. The 2012 team won the division by grit and experience and Girardi, but the median age is about 35...ARod looks finished, Cano is the "youth" on the team. Can't think of a player I'd want for Morse.

On the major league side, sure, but they still have a handful of younger guys to look at in the low-minors.

Have to admit that Yankee fans don't believe that prospects on their low-minors teams are even part of the organization. They exist only to be traded for the next available 38 year old who won a Cy Young within the last 15 years.
