I feel that we should be #1.  Winning the world series 2 out of 3 years does not necessarily make them the best team.  Our pitching and offense is better going into next year.

Also LOL at the A's being #5.

Dan Plesac and Billy Ripken also did a power ranking on MLB Tonight.  Plesac had the Nationals #2 (Tigers #1) and Ripken had the Nationals #1.

Did it look like Billy was pained by putting the Nats at #1?  I remember watching him last year and he was a doubter until well into the season.  Plesac picked the Nats for the playoffs before last season if I remember correctly.

I watched MLB tonight yesterday and Billy had the O's in first place.  I'll be surprised if they do better than 4th.

Ripken also picked the Nationals as the team that has improved the most this offseason.

I'm not so sure you can call what they're doing "improving"

more like

'absurding"   ;)

Where did Mitch have the Nats? He always has our back.

He probably moonwalked all over the set after we did what he said we'd do the past two seasons and everyone laughed at him.

I don't think the Nats have improved at all.  At this point I'd put them about the same.

Also, addition by subtraction - no Nady or Lidge next year.

The bullpen is my biggest concern. Losing Burnett, Gorzelanny, and Gonzalez will hurt. No substantial additions have been made (Bill Bray and Zach Duke meh meh).

Look forward to another season of Clip getting burnt out and Storen pissing his pants unless Rizzo acts soon.

How "lucky" do people think we were last year injury-wise.  Seems to me we were fairly unlucky, and so we could expect to see decent improvement just by better health.

We were extremely lucky with the health of the rotation.

We were extremely lucky with the health of the rotation.

And extremely unlucky with every other position. So many people are saying "watch out" for the Phillies being healthy again in 2013 but no one ever mentions that the Nats had to deal with major injuries/lack of playing time to Zimmerman, Desmond, Ramos, Werth, Morse, Strasburg, and Harper.

Yes, we were extremely lucky with our rotation's health last season, something that probably won't happen again, but let's not pretend that the team as a whole escaped unscathed.

And Flores.  Flores got nearly 300 ab's and had a sub .600 OPS.  Nady got 100 ab's with a sub .500 OPS.  Derosa also got 100 with a .550 OPS.

That is 500 ab's where the Nats got ridiculously terrible production at the plate.

It doesn't include Ankiel's 170 ab's - he put up a respectable .700 OPS with great defense (albeit way too many k's to go with his occasional power).

I'd make that tradeoff every day of the week.  Especially next year when we won't have Lannan to fall back on as the 6th starter.  The difference between Strasburg/Gio and the 6th starter is a lot greater than the difference between a middle infielder and a utility guy.

we also aren't going to try and put Ian Desmond & Espinosa at leadoff again.

We'll still likely have players of that caliber playing following injury,  we're at a point though where we have back ups who are mostly competent,  and since all the starting ofs can play center,  we won't end up having to start a guy like Perez if span goes down.

Pitching can mask a lot of ills.  If we see the injuries in the rotation equivalent to what we saw in the lineup last year, we won't be repeating.  It's not really an apples to apples comparison.

The biggest improvement for the Nats next year will be Stras two years removed from surgery and with no innings limit.

Harper for a full year in the bigs is a close second.

Assuming full health of our players, I think Ramos healthy for a full year will be the biggest improvement.  Second is Zim healthy for a full year.  Third is Harper a year older and for the full year and fourth is Stras for the full year.  This is regular season impact.

Postseason, having Stras pitching is clearly #1 improvement.
