Well, that certainly didn't end well. Meh. Time to focus on next year. So, who should we get?

With the national TV contract kicking in it's going to be a crazy offseason, the market is going to spike upwards, teams are going to be throwing piles of money at marginal players.  Any chance at signing a big name will require setting a new standard for contracts, something that the Nats have been reluctant to do, other than the notable exception of the Werth signing.  Fortunately we have our core team locked up and only need to upgrade at a couple spots.

I'll take Haren or Greinke. I'd then trade Morse for a potential pitching prospect or something. Then I'd try to acquire an outfielder (Justin Upton!!! lol). If not, we will have one of our younger guys come up the year after (Hood? Goodwin? (or is that too early?)). I also hope Rendon makes the team out of camp so we can play him at 2B.

1) a vet starting pitcher whose shown they can pitch in the playoffs(Lohse)
2) a vet reliever w/ playoff experience(Madson)
3) Trade Morse & Resign Laroche to another 2 year deal.
4) open comp @ 2nd base & switch Rendon to 2nd in the minors

Who's the best FA closer? Clip and Storen are setup men at best. One of them will be traded.

Morse is owed $7 million for next year, not too bad if you assume that his power number can remain stable and he is healthy, but with his defense, how much is he really going to return in a trade?  As for LaRoche, I'd go year to year with him at this point.

An AL team would love Morse's bat

Yeah for real. I like the guy and I think he can put up 30-40 homers a year with a decent average... but he really cannot hit in clutch situations. He swings for the fences too much. I wouldn't be mad if we kept him and had the same outfield until one of our younger guys are ready but I'd prefer it if we got new blood in there that is good at offense and defense.

Pretty sure Madson is a FA & i wouldn't mind adding Broxton to our bullpen.

How many teams need a DH?  (The Astros)  A few, and what are they going to be willing to give up to get one?  We're not going to get a five tool player for a one tool guy.

Laroche already said hes not comfy w/ a one year deal. If we give him another 2 year deal w/ a mutual option hed probably take it. Morse isn't as good at 1B as Laroche & Bryce will eventually need to move to a corner the writing is on the wall.

A mutual option for a second year isn't any different than a one year deal, so i'm fine with that, as long as we're not on the hook for 2014.  (And Morse was fine at 1st, not a gold glover, but good enough.)

The mutual option would be for a third year. Laroche is a LH power bat we need that in our lineup & we need a first basemen who can bail zim & desmond out they're not the most accurate.

Moore will be the guy sooner rather than later, I like LaRoche and want him for another year, but he's not going to be around much beyond that.  We've got other needs and his salary is going to increase following this season.
