From a UVA fan... I've never seen Duke/UMD as rivals. Same way as I don't see UVA as a rival of any of Duke/UNC/UMD.

This season? Rushing the court has already lost all meaning. CFB teams rush the field like once a week.

Rushing the court is getting a bit ridiculous this season.

Arkansas kicked Florida's ass when they were #2 and there was no rush.

Now Maryland, with a national championship 10 years ago, rushes against #2. Everyone is rushing every time against a top 5. Heck, a ranked Oklahoma State team had its fan rush after beating unranked OU last night.

Maryland vs. Puke >>>>>>>>> Arkansas vs. Florida. No.offence intended by that, but its not even close.

The "rivalry" is only seen as such from one team's fanbase. It's like orioles fans thinking that the yankees are their rivals.

Maryland isn't Duke's main rival obviously (that title goes to UNC), but there's no denying MD and Duke have a history in their matchup and the Maryland fanbase and players get fired up for every Duke game.

There's a reason every Duke-MD game is on national television.

But we have no rivals, therefore we have to project our rivalry on other teams. We as UMD students and fans accept this and embrace it. Not like we'd get a rivalry any other way.

who cares?
My comment was more directed at Oklahoma State. For a ranked team to rush against an unranked? Yikes

As a rivalry? Think it's equivalent. We probably have more distaste for Florida than they do us. They're a program we want to measure ourselves against as we begin a new era with a new coach. We both have successful programs historically. Replace "Florida" with "Duke" and you could say same for Maryland in this situation.  Duke is a better program than Florida, but Florida still has two national championships in the last 6 years.

Quality of teams? Duke and Florida are on same level. Maryland is an edge better than Arkansas this season but not significantly so.

Now, admittedly, Arkansas and Florida are both more focused on football while Maryland and Duke are basketball first.

I don't get why Maryland and Georgetown aren't playing every season. That could be an awesome rivalry.

Goes back at least as far as John and Lefty if I remember correctly (70s).

And it also goes back to JT Jr and Gary.  They played in 1993 at the old Cap Center (US AIR) in what was the precursor to the BB&T classic.  US Air was G'town's homecourt and the agreement was that G'Town would repay the game with one at Cole.  Maryland beat G'Town, who was ranked at the time.  Reports were that Maryland had more fans at the game than G'Town, eventhough they were the "home" team.  JT Jr got salty and refused to play the game that was owed at Cole.  Maryland's AD took it a step further recently when he said Maryland and G'Town wouldnt play in ANY sport until G'Town plays at Comcast.   I'm not too confident this game happens anytime in the near future, though it would be exciting.

As a State fan down here in NC, I definitely view Duke-Maryland as a rivalry. IMO, Maryland is either Duke's second or close third rival behind UNC-CH and either before/after State.

Duke is a funny situation coming from a North Carolinian. It's not what many outsiders view it to be.

So the Catholic 7 are adding Xavier and Butler and keeping the Big East name.

I kinda wish they would dump the name, but that is going to be a great conference to watch. Long live East Coast basketball.

What is not surprising, but is indicative of the times, is that Fox Sports basically arranged the whole thing, and promised the schools a big media deal if they left.

so it is Marquette, DePaul, Butler, Xavier, G-town, Vanillanova, Seton Hall, Saint John's, and Providence?

I love the Big East name.  This gets back to why the conference was founded in the first place.  It gives the high level non-football urban schools with strong basketball traditions an opportunity to play in one league that has schools with similar commitments to the sport.

It may be hard for the young'ns to remember, but back in the old ECAC semi-independent days, East coast basketball was not thought of highly except for the ACC.  Even the ACC was thought to be insular and over-rated because only the tournament winner would go to the NCAA.  By putting together the original Big East, it even helped the non-members like the A-10 get recognition.

Butler is a bit odd as a member because it is not Catholic, but adding an Indianapolis and a Cincinatti school may help a bit on TV, and of course it adds a lot to the quality of the hoops.  They are sort of the UConn in the old set up.
