Headin' to Western PA this weekend.   Lookin' forward to goin' to the old watering hole that served generations of vets and steelworkers.    Every guy I knew who got out of the service would make the place his first stop after getting home and not pay for a drink for days.   When I worked in the mill, it was the last place we stopped goin' in (no drinking ... maybe one) and the first place we stopped goin' home (drink).    We'd work nightshift, hit the bar on the way home (it was open 20 hours a day   ...  not sure that was even legal) and then go play 18.

I stopped by one 4th of July and asked the bartender (old HS acquaintance) if I could get a shot of Myers' Rum.    He looked at me and said, "Really?"     We laughed and each had a shot of some rail rum.

If I'm ever going to shell out serious money for George, it'll be this George...

I've been passing by that gw distillery and looked like it could be worth a visit.  All the other distilleries around here are in warehouses and corporate parks.  Might feel like a stop on the bourbon trail

Sure, that would be fun.  First stop on the historical rye trail.

They hired a master distiller from Maker's Mark a few years ago to take the historical recipe and create a version adapted for modern tastes.  I assume they still produce the original recipe too, but not sure.

Gin is a scarcely explored opportunity for me.  I bought a "dirty" gin from Catoctin Creek that they make from their rye tailings, definitely more interesting than the typical bland widely available products.

How do you like to drink it?

last summer was the first time I'd had gin in years- I got a bottle of green hat from a friend, and gin and tonics and rickys (when lime was available) became my go to for really hot summer nights (I've tried others since and haven't liked them as much)

Splash of tonic and a bit of lime is my go-to, especially when there's only crap beer on tap.

Yes, but so many tonics to choose from now!  Like everything else, a booming micro business.

Gin has been off limits for me ever since I chose to do my 4th year fifth with gin.

BAD MISTAKE.

I know we said no booze stories, but this isn't a story.  I love bourbon and so everyone just assumes I like scotch and/or Irish Whiskey.

I don't.

I like Rye and Irish, but pass on bourbon (unless it's all there is) and do not like scotch.

Scotch is the emperor wearing no clothes.

I wouldn't drag Irish whiskey into this however.    :nono:

If I've ever had a good scotch, I don't recall it  :glug:

Love some rye though.

Irish is just plain bad. Scotch that doesn't pretend to be cough syrup is the best of the lot

You need to stop drinking the low end Jamison's / Bushmills.

Redbreast.

The thing about Irish though, is, as opposed to Scotch, or even rye or bourbon, it's very sweet.  If you don't like sweet, don't bother.

And Jamison is the authentic Irish whiskey. Not that northern Scotch-Irish Bushmills.

Scotch sucks.    It reminds me of cod liver oil or some such thing.    Maybe 5W 30 Penzoil.

I don't mind jamo occasionally. Wouldn't buy a handle, but if it's the best going at the bar, sometimes. That's usually when I just go back to gin

I imagine if you squeezed plyboard and juice came out of it, it would taste like gin.

It tastes of juniper. It's delicious with the right mixer. Which would be tonic.

If we ever meet at Nats Park, I'll buy you a Bailey's Comet and you'll enjoy the scotch in it
